YMCA Calgary Volunteer Position

Volunteer Title: Child and Family Volunteer

Location: Various YMCA Locations

Reports To: Child and Family Supervisor

Note: This role has an age requirement of 16+ years.

Summary

Volunteers within the Child & Family department will provide support through facilitation and

co-facilitation of Grade 6 and youth programs such as Sport activities, Arts & Science nights,

Family Centre activities, city wide Grade 6 event and Youth Leadership programs, under the

guidance of a Child & Family Youth Worker. This role involves engaging with the youth in

programs creating an environment that is positive, inclusive, and safe for all. Child & Family

volunteers will be supervised by and require ongoing communication with the Child & Family

Youth Workers.

 

Time Commitment

This position requires an 8-month commitment. Volunteers are expected to commit to one (1) volunteer shift per week. Shifts are 2 hours in length and typically scheduled on evenings and Saturdays.

Duties and Responsibilities

Health and Safety

  1. Maintain a safe environment by following YMCA Calgary policies and procedures
  2. Build relationships with members, participants, and YMCA staff and volunteers
  3. Communicate with YMCA Staff regarding any situations during your volunteer shift

Program Support

  1. Ensure safety, communication, and a sense of belonging are high priorities
  2. Manage risks associated with participation in programs
  3. Communicate with Youth Workers regarding any questions or concerns regarding individual or situations during program time
  4. Deal with minor behaviors of the participants in the programs
  5. Facilitate delivery of pre-planned activities

Skills

At YMCA Calgary we ensure our volunteers are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following:

  1. Have worked with children or youth in some capacity
  2. Have an interest in physical literacy
  3. Able to manage behaviours of youth in the program
  4. Be comfortable to lead and supervise the program without a Youth Worker being present

Qualifications

  1. Clear Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search (volunteer letter will be provided after interview)
  2. Three references (two professional)
  3. Able to attend and complete required trainings
  4. Standard First Aid and CPR-C Certificate
  5. Desire to work with youth in multi functional situations
