Note: This role has an age requirement of 14+ years.
Summary
Volunteer in the water, where you can assist a certified swim instructor in Preschool, Learn to Swim, and Star-level swimming lessons. The Assistant Swim Instructor Volunteer will gain valuable experience in areas including class supervision, teamwork, stroke and skill correction, and leadership. Familiarize yourself with the aquatic team and environment while making a difference in your community!
Time Commitment
This position requires a 6-month commitment. Volunteers are expected to commit to one (1) volunteer shift per week. Shifts are approximately 3 to 4 hours in length and typically scheduled on weekday evenings between 4:00PM and 7:00PM.
Duties and Responsibilities
Health and Safety
- Maintain a safe environment by following YMCA Calgary policies and procedures
- Build relationships with members, participants, and YMCA staff and volunteers
- Communicate with YMCA Staff regarding any situations during your volunteer shift
Program Support
- Follow the direction of the Swim Instructor to assist as needed during lessons
- Ensure safety, communication, and a sense of belonging are high priorities
- Manage risks associated with participation in programs
- Assist with deck management (patron direction in high traffic times and lesson transitions)
- Supplemental help with set up and take down of equipment for programs

Qualifications
- Clear Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search (volunteer letter will be provided after interview)
- Valid CPR-C issued within the last 12 months
- Standard First Aid
- Bronze Cross
- Three references (two professional)
- Able to attend and complete required trainings
