Volunteer Title: Family Playground Volunteer

Location: Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge, Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton, Remington YMCA at Quarry Park

Reports To: Preschool Supervisor

Note: This role has an age requirement of 16+ years.

Summary

Family Playground is an indoor interactive play structure that follows YMCA Calgary’s Play to Learn philosophy. Family Playground Volunteers assist in providing positive, engaging, and safe experiences to families and children aged 0-5 years. Volunteers in Family Playground are comfortable engaging with children and guardians.

Time Commitment

This position requires an 8-month commitment. Volunteers are expected to commit to one (1) volunteer shift per week. Shifts are:

Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge: Monday and Friday from 8:30AM-11:30AM.

Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton: Monday to Friday from 11:30AM-1:30PM

Remington YMCA at Quarry Park: Monday to Friday from 10:30AM-12:30PM

Duties and Responsibilities

Health and Safety

  1. Maintain a safe environment by following YMCA Calgary policies and procedures.
  2. Ensure the equipment is clean and safe and report damaged equipment to YMCA staff.
  3. Build relationships with members, participants, and YMCA staff and volunteers.
  4. Communicate with YMCA Staff regarding any situations during your volunteer shift.

Program Support

  1. Communicate the rules of Family Playground to parents and guardians.
  2. Provide a positive experience for children and families. Engage with participants as needed.
  3. Ensure safety, communication, and a sense of belonging are high priorities.
  4. Assist with the setup and takedown of equipment.

  1. Customer service experience with a customer-oriented attitude
  2. Ability to stand/bend/exert for extended periods of time
  3. Excellent communication skills
  4. Ability to take initiative, be creative, and self-direct
  5. Engaging and outgoing personality
  6. Capability to work both independently and collaboratively
  7. Experience engaging and working with diverse groups of people

Qualifications

  1. Clear Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search (volunteer letter will be provided after interview)
  2. Three references (two professional)
  3. Able to attend and complete required trainings
  4. The volunteer in this role must be able to stand for extended periods of time, bend, and lift up to 40 pounds
