Note: This role has an age requirement of 15 years.
Summary
The Homework Helpers program is designed to support Junior High students to succeed in their core subjects; Math, Science, English Language Arts and Social Studies. Volunteers will work with up to three students for a two-hour session per week. Students and volunteers will be paired together based on the needs of the students and the knowledge of the tutor. While each tutor will primarily support students in their specialized subject, they will also be required to provide support in all other core subject areas with the support of the Lead Tutor.
Time Commitment
F September 15th – June 30th. Volunteers are expected to commit to one (1) volunteer shift per week. Shifts will be Tuesdays or Thursday 4:00-6:00pm.
Duties and Responsibilities
Health and Safety
- Maintain a safe environment by following YMCA Calgary policies and procedures.
- Ensure the equipment is clean and safe and report damaged equipment to YMCA staff.
- Build relationships with members, participants, and YMCA staff and volunteers.
- Communicate with YMCA Staff regarding any situations during your volunteer shift.
Program Support
- Ensure safety, communication, and a sense of belonging are high priorities
- Manage risks associated with participation in programs
- Volunteer tutors should be comfortable:

- Working with junior high school youth in a group setting
- Communicating with and teaching youth struggling in core subject areas
- Engaging in a positive, strengths-based approach
Skills

future goals. The successful candidate will have the following:
- Strong knowledge of at least two junior high core subjects; Math, Science, English Language Arts and Social Studies.
- Commitment towards teaching and mentoring
- Experience working with junior high school youth in a group setting
- Ability to engage with youth using a positive, strengths-based approach
