POSITION OVERVIEW
YMCA Calgary is seeking passionate and detail-oriented Volunteer Historians to research, document, and help tell the story of YMCA Calgary's 125-year history. This volunteer role will support efforts to preserve and share the organization's historical legacy, including the built heritage of current and former YMCA facilities, community impact, programs, leadership, and role in Calgary's story.
The Volunteer Historians will conduct archival and online research, review historical documents and photographs, and develop engaging written content for internal and external audiences. The role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation of YMCA Calgary’s history and to share this history with our community throughout YMCA Calgary’s 125th anniversary in 2027.
Age requirement: 18+
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Historical Research
- Conduct research into the history of YMCA Calgary from its founding to the present day.
- Access and review archival materials, including:
- YMCA Calgary records and publications
- Annual reports
- Historical photographs
- News articles and media coverage
- Building and facility records
- Community and organizational documents
- Undertake online research using digital archives, historical databases, newspapers, academic sources, and public records.
- Identify significant milestones, programs, initiatives, and individuals in YMCA Calgary's history.
Built Heritage Research
- Research the history and significance of YMCA Calgary facilities and buildings, past and present.
- Document the architectural, social, and community significance of YMCA properties.
- Investigate historic sites associated with YMCA Calgary.
- Review heritage inventories, planning documents, and archival records related to YMCA buildings.
- Support opportunities to commemorate and celebrate YMCA Calgary's built heritage.
Content Development
- Prepare written historical summaries, timelines, and backgrounders.
- Draft articles, blog posts, website content, and heritage features.
- Develop historical profiles of significant people, programs, events, and facilities.
- Assist in creating content for anniversaries, commemorations, exhibits, social media initiatives, and heritage-related projects.
- Organize research findings in a clear and accessible format.
Documentation and Knowledge Management
- Create and maintain research files and source documentation.
- Catalogue and organize historical information and materials.
- Ensure historical information is accurately sourced and referenced.
- Contribute to the development of a historical archive and repository of organizational knowledge.
General
- Maintain a safe environment by following policies and procedures to manage risks associated with participation in programs
- Build relationships with YMCA staff and volunteers
- Ensure safety, communication and a sense of belonging are high priorities
- Work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers
- Communicate with the Manager, Communications & Engagement regarding any situations during your shift

SKILLS
At YMCA Calgary we ensure our volunteers are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidates will have the following:
- Strong interest in history, heritage conservation, archives, museums, genealogy, public history, or community history.
- Academic background or coursework in history, heritage conservation, archives, museum studies, anthropology, planning, architecture, journalism, or a related field.
- Experience conducting archival or historical research with archives, libraries, museums, or historical societies.
- Familiarity with or strong interest in Calgary history.
- Knowledge of heritage buildings, built heritage, or historical preservation practices.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple research tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to factual accuracy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and online research tools.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
- Three references – one can be personal reference
- Able to attend and complete required YMCA trainings which may be at various YMCA locations
- Available evenings and/or weekends if required
