Note: This role has an age requirement of 18+ years.

 

Program Overview

TGCA and Planet Youth, in partnership with YMCA Calgary, are offering free summer programming for children ages 5–12 in the Thorncliffe and Greenview communities. Programming runs weekly throughout July and August and provides a safe, structured, and inclusive environment where children can play, learn, and build confidence.

Activities include games, sports, creative arts, and hands‑on projects designed to support social connection, skill‑building, and positive community engagement.

Role Overview

The Lead Youth Program Facilitator plays a key leadership role in supporting the success of the TGCA Free Summer Youth Program. This volunteer works closely with TGCA staff to oversee daily programming, support other volunteers, and ensure a safe, inclusive, and well‑organized experience for participants.

 

Time Commitment

This position requires a 2-month commitment. Volunteers are expected to commit to one (1) volunteer shift per week on Wednesdays12:00–5:00 pm from July 8 to August 26. The August 26 shift will be an evening event for families taking place from 5:00pm to 9:00 pm.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and on‑site guidance during program hours
  • Report to the TGCA Programming and Community Engagement Coordinator
  • Support and supervise Program Facilitator volunteers
  • Manage daily schedules, transitions, and headcounts
  • Model positive behaviour management and inclusive engagement strategies
  • Assist with and delegate setup and facilitation of structured activities
  • Support safety procedures and respond calmly to challenges or conflicts
  • Assist with end‑of‑day clean‑up and program wrap‑up

 

Training & Orientation

A volunteer orientation will be held at the TGCA prior to the program starting. All facilitators will be provided with clear guidelines and a detailed overview of the programming, with ongoing staff support throughout the summer. You will also be required to complete these training courses during your onboarding:

  • YBeginnings Orientation
  • Health, Safety, and Risk Training
  • Child Safety and Protection Training
  • Other trainings based on specific role

  • Clear Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Three references, two of them being professional
  • Able to attend and complete required training courses
