ABOUT PROSPECT

Break Barriers. Employ Change.

Prospect Human Services (Prospect) is a not-for-profit organization working to reduce barriers to employment across Alberta. We support individuals and employers to create inclusive, meaningful participation in the workforce. Our work is practical, community based, and grounded in dignity, respect, and opportunity.

We believe employment changes lives, families, and communities.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Prospect is seeking new Board Directors to join a committed governance board.

This role is for people who want to contribute at a strategic level, care about inclusive employment, and value thoughtful governance. Board Directors help guide the long-term direction of Prospect, provide oversight, and support the CEO, while trusting staff to manage day to day operations.

This is a governance role. It is not an operational role.

TIME COMMITMENT

Board members commit an average of 6 to 8 hours per quarter. This typically includes:

  • Board meetings every two months (typically 5 times per year)
  • Participation on one committee
  • An annual board retreat
  • Optional attendance at Prospect events based on interest and availability

We respect that board members are volunteers with other professional and personal commitments.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

As a Board Director, you will:

  • Participate in strategic discussions and key decisions
  • Provide financial and risk oversight, including review of budgets and audit materials
  • Support and oversee the CEO at a governance level
  • Contribute to CEO evaluation and board succession planning
  • Act as an ambassador for Prospect when opportunities arise

Board members are not involved in managing staff or programs.

FRIEND RAISING, FUNDRAISING AND FINANCIAL EXPECTATIONS

Board members support fundraising by sharing insight, making introductions, and opening doors where appropriate. Fundraising activity is led by staff.

Board members are not required to make a personal financial contribution. Many choose to give at a level that feels meaningful to them, and that support is sincerely appreciated. We value time, perspective, integrity, and accountability.

ROLE FIT

This role may be a good fit if you:

  • Enjoy strategic discussion and governance-level decision-making
  • Value inclusive employment and community impact
  • Are comfortable with accountability, oversight, and asking hard questions
  • Value collaboration, curiosity, and open, respectful dialogue

EXPERIENCE AND PERSPECTIVES WE WELCOME

We are seeking candidates from a variety of backgrounds, and currently welcome individuals with general professional experience to apply. Prospect is committed to building a Board that reflects the diversity of our community, and encourages candidates of all backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences to consider joining us.

Previous experience with boards and/or not-for-profit organizations is an asset but not required.

TERM

Board Directors serve a three-year term and may serve up to three consecutive terms, in accordance with the Society’s bylaws. Board Directors are drawn from Prospect’s Society membership. If you are not currently a Society Member, we will invite you to become one as part of your application/appointment process.

PROSPECT’S BRAND PILLARS

Prospect strongly believes in its five brand pillars and is looking for great candidates who share the same beliefs:

Enthusiastic

Professional

In every facet of our work, our actions show a commitment to professional management and service delivery. Prospect is accountable, ethical and honest.

Innovative

Prospect creates change by envisioning the end game and creating the means to realize it. We believe asking “why not?” aids progress. Solutions are created when we think beyond traditional boundaries.

Inclusive

Prospect is driven to achieve equal access for all to opportunities and resources. We strive to create a fair, healthy and high-performing environment where everyone is respected, encouraged and motivated, and their contributions help Prospect attain its goals.

Collaborative

Prospect seeks different perspectives. All parties must be engaged, including for-profit, not-for-profit, funders and government. Only by understanding all points of view can we create inclusive workplaces.

At Prospect, we value the diversity of people. Diversity at Prospect means a workplace where individual differences are recognized and appreciated, respected and responded to in ways that fully develop and utilize each person’s talents and strengths. If you require an accommodation to participate in the application or selection process, please contact the HR/Recruitment department at careers@prospectnow.ca. Prospect will consult with all applicants who request accommodation during the process to ensure that the accommodation provided takes into account any individual accessibility needs. Any information received relating to accommodation will be addressed confidentially.
