Our Skating & Bike programs are based out of:

Volunteer opportunities in Skating & Bike Programs are typically a good fit for people who are:

  • 14+ years of age
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Available weekday afternoons and during non-instructional days (e.g. Spring and Summer Break)
  • For skate programs: able to skate forward, backward, and stop with good balance and control
  • For bike programs: able to ride a bike with good balance and control

Applying to Volunteer:

  • Fill in an application (link)
  • Sign up for and attend an interview
  • Complete and submit a Criminal Record Check
  • Review the Volunteer Handbook and submit a Volunteer Agreement Form
  • Sign up for and attend a Volunteer Orientation

Volunteer Opportunities

Learn to Skate Program Volunteer

Learn to Skate Program Volunteers assist in providing technical and fun instruction to participants ages 3 to 12 as they develop basic ice skating skills in a fun and supportive environment. Volunteers help to increase the amount of attention we can pay to each child, improving the quality of programs and building children’s connections to their community.

Requirements:

  • 14 years of age or older and in Grade 9 or above
  • Able to skate at an intermediate level: forwards and backwards with good balance and control, and to make a controlled stop.
  • Previous experience working with children an asset
  • Previous experience with ice sports an asset
  • Fluent in spoken English (fluency in a second language is an asset)

Seasons: Winter, Spring, Fall

Skate Lobby Host

Skate Lobby Hosts help to welcome participants and assist them in getting onto the ice in a safe and timely manner. Tasks may include welcoming visitors and providing directions, directing visitors with questions about program registrations to the Customer Service Desk and helping participants to tie skates and secure helmets. 

Requirements:

  • 14 years of age or older and in Grade 9 or above
  • Previous customer service experience an asset
  • Previous experience with ice sports an asset
  • Fluent in spoken English (fluency in a second language is an asset)

Seasons: Winter, Fall

Skate Day Camps

Skate Day Camp Volunteers help children ages 6-10 gain confidence and experience a variety of physical ice activities at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre, as they learn and strengthen FUNdamental skating skills and play ice sports. Volunteers will also help facilitate a variety of creative activities off the ice. Skate Day Camps typically run on Pro D Days and during Spring and Summer Break.

Requirements:

  • 15 years of age or older
  • Able to skate at an intermediate level: forwards and backwards with good balance and control, and to make a controlled stop.
  • Previous experience working with children an asset
  • Previous experience with ice sports an asset
  • Fluent in spoken English (fluency in a second language is an asset)

Little Sprockets Support

Help share the joy of bike riding! Working with Bike program instructors, Little Sprockets Support Volunteers play an important role in assisting young riders to develop basic bike riding skills in a fun and supportive environment.  Help to increase the amount of attention we can pay to each child, improving the quality of programs and building children’s connections to their community.

Requirements:

  • 14 years of age or older and in Grade 9 or above
  • Able to ride a bicycle with good control and balance
  • Previous experience working with children an asset
  • Fluent in spoken English (fluency in a second language is an asset)

Seasons: Spring, Summer

Bike Camp Volunteer

Assist Recreation Leaders as they provide engaging and interactive bike camps for children ages 6 to 11. Trail Blazers and Skate, Bike, Swim Camps Bike Camps enjoy riding local trails after learning about trail etiquette, road safety, hand signals, shoulder checks, and use of gears. Volunteers are required to bring their own bike and helmet. Volunteers will also engage participants in outdoor play, which may include swimming at a local pool and ice skating at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre.

Requirements:

  • 15 years of age or older
  • Able to ride a bicycle with good control and balance.
  • Able to swim and skate with confidence an asset for Skate, Bike, Swim camps.
  • Previous experience working with children an asset
  • Fluent in spoken English (fluency in a second language is an asset)
