Disability Support Services (DSS)

Outline of Role

Disability Support Services is a program of FamilyCare which provides support to people with a disability, and their families.

FamilyCare Disability Support Services are available to families of people who have a range of disabilities including intellectual, physical, sensory disability, developmental delay, acquired brain injury or mental illness.

DSS offers a range of services ranging from emotional support, parent/carer activities, information/ education sessions, respite and recreation programs.

 

IntoRec Program

A wide variety of assisted recreation programs and social activities are available and include camps, school holiday care, after school programs and a range of other enjoyable activities. These programs essentially aim to assist people with disabilities to develop skills and to promote community access to all aspects of their local community.

 

Volunteers are required to assist the participants to access the recreational activities provided on the IntoRec Program. While appropriately qualified staff members are in attendance on all activities, many people require assistance with tasks such as game playing, reading stories, art and craft and cooking.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Good oral and written communication skills;
  • A ‘can do’ mindset;
  • Good organisational and time management skills;
  • Ability to communicate with all groups of people from a range of backgrounds and ages;
  • A friendly and approachable manner.

Other Requirements

You will have a desire to make a positive contribution to the lives of families, children and aged persons from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds.

You must be aware of FamilyCare’s responsibilities to contribute to children’s safety and wellbeing and report any concerns about neglect or abuse to a supervisor or manager.

We will advise you of any occupational health and safety requirements that you need to be aware of and follow.

We will advise you of, and train you in, the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.

We will ensure you are aware of any relevant policies and procedures that are to be followed.

Supervision, support and training will be provided.

Safety Screening

Essential for all staff and Volunteers:

  • National Police History Check.
  • Applicants who have lived overseas for 12 months or longer during the past 10 years are required to provide the results of an international police check.
  • A current Employee Working with Children Check (WWCC) card is required.
  • NDIS Worker Screening Check
  • Current Australian Drivers Licence (where applicable).

FamilyCare will support and assist our volunteers with the applications and also cover any costs associated.
