MOSAIC 50th – Walkathon Volunteers (Short-Term)

PROGRAM: MOSAIC 50th Anniversary
LOCATION(S): Swangard Stadium & Central Park, Burnaby, BC
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Join us in celebrating MOSAIC’s 50th anniversary by supporting the MOSAIC Moves Walkathon! We are hiring volunteers support for this event - which includes 1 event day and 2-3 days for orientation and training. As this is a short-term volunteer opportunity, we highly encourage you to select other opportunities such as the "General Pool - Event Assistant Volunteer" role, to receive information regarding other opportunities.
PURPOSE:
Volunteers will contribute to supporting MOSAIC host a fun walkathon for the community. Each role is unique and will allow for volunteers to contribute their skills and talents. We hope you can consider volunteering on this meaningful occasion!
ROLES:
Event Support Team – Morning Shift
Shift: 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM (5 hours)
Quantity: 10 volunteers
Mobility Level: Some standing, walking, and light lifting required
Description:
The Event Support Team (Morning Shift) plays a key role in setting up the event and supporting early activities. Volunteers in this role will assist with a variety of tasks to ensure the event is ready for participants and runs smoothly during peak arrival time.
Responsibilities may include:
- Assisting with event setup (tents, tables, signage, activity areas)
- Supporting vendor and community booth setup
- Assisting with participant registration and check-in
- Welcoming and directing participants and families
- Supporting activity stations, including children’s games
- Assisting with water stations and general event needs
- Providing general support to staff and responding to emerging needs
This role is ideal for volunteers who are flexible, proactive, and comfortable supporting a variety of tasks in a dynamic environment.
Event Support Team – Afternoon Shift
Shift: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM (4 hours)
Quantity: 12 volunteers
Mobility Level: Some standing, walking, and light lifting required
Description:
The Event Support Team (Afternoon Shift) supports ongoing event activities and assists with event wrap-up. Volunteers will help maintain a positive participant experience while ensuring a smooth transition into event closing and takedown.
Responsibilities may include:
- Supporting activity areas such as children’s games and interactive zones (e.g., bouncy castle supervision support)
- Assisting at water stations and participant areas
- Supporting performers and stage/green room needs as required
- Providing general assistance to vendors and community booths
- Helping manage crowd flow and participant directions
- Assisting with event takedown (packing materials, dismantling stations, cleanup)
- Providing flexible support where needed
This role is well-suited for volunteers who are adaptable, energetic, and comfortable engaging with participants while also supporting physical tasks.
Route Marshal Volunteer
Shift: 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM (5 hours)
Quantity: 30 volunteers
Mobility Level: Primarily standing and light walking
Description:
Route Marshals are essential to ensuring a safe and positive experience for all participants on both the 1 km and 5 km routes. Volunteers will be stationed at key points along the route to guide participants and monitor safety.
Responsibilities include:
- Directing participants along the correct route
- Ensuring participants safely navigate crossings and key turns
- Providing encouragement and support to walkers and runners
- Monitoring for any safety concerns or participants needing assistance
- Communicating with event staff regarding any issues or incidents
- Helping maintain a visible and reassuring presence along the route
Volunteers in this role should be attentive, responsible, and comfortable providing clear directions to large groups of people.
Parking Attendants Volunteer
Shift: 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM (3.5 hours)
Quantity: 6 volunteers
Mobility Level: Primarily standing and light walking
Description:
Parking Attendant Volunteers support the safe and efficient flow of vehicles and participants in designated parking and drop-off areas. They help ensure a smooth arrival experience for participants and minimize congestion.
Responsibilities include:
- Directing participants/vehicles to appropriate parking areas
- Assisting with safe participants movement near parking zones and directing them to the event space
- Supporting designated drop-off and pick-up areas
- Helping manage traffic flow and reduce congestion
- Communicating any issues or concerns to event staff
Volunteers in this role should be confident communicating directions clearly, remain calm under pressure, and maintain awareness of their surroundings.
TIME COMMITMENT:

Volunteers must commit to attending orientations, trainings & the shift assignments of the Walkathon
REQUIREMENTS:
- All applicants must go through our MOSAIC volunteer screening and onboarding process
- Screening process includes Volunteer Interview/General Orientation, Reference Checks, Criminal Record Check Clearance Letter, Agree to MOSAIC’s Confidentiality Policy and Volunteer Agreement
- Complete mandatory CORE Orientation & Trainings
- Complete General Orientation and role briefing prior to the event
- Volunteers are required to find their own mode of transportation to volunteer sites
- Volunteers may be asked to lift heavy items up to 20lb
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Specific assignments may be adjusted on-site based on event needs
- All volunteers are expected to work collaboratively and support a welcoming, inclusive environment
