Position Overview

The Inspiration Garden Volunteer plays a vital role in caring for and sustaining the beauty, productivity, and health of the Inspiration Garden. This position focuses on hands-on garden stewardship through planting, seeding, watering, weeding, and general maintenance, helping the garden thrive as a living example of organic and regenerative gardening in the Texas Hill Country.

Location: Herff Farm – Inspiration Garden, 33 Herff Road, Boerne, Tx. Enter main gate, turn left, park where convenient to the Grapevine Arbor. Garden will be to the left of the entrance.

Reports To: Farm Education / Garden Staff

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with planting seasonal vegetables, herbs, flowers, and native plants.
  • Support seed starting and direct seeding in garden beds and designated growing areas.
  • Help maintain healthy garden spaces through regular weeding and mulching.
  • Water plants appropriately using hand tools, irrigation systems, or rainwater collection when needed.
  • Assist with soil preparation, compost application, and bed maintenance.
  • Help maintain pathways, garden edges, and overall garden appearance.
  • Monitor plant health and report pests, disease, or irrigation issues and address as needed.
  • Assist with seasonal garden transitions and general upkeep projects.

Work Hours

  • Flexible scheduling based on volunteer availability and garden needs.
  • Typical volunteer shifts range from 2–4 hours.
  • Opportunities available on weekday mornings, volunteer workdays, and occasional Saturdays during the Farmers Market.
  • Consistency is appreciated to support ongoing garden care, but no minimum hour requirement is required.

Physical Requirements

  •  Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, and sun.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and squat for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (soil, compost, watering cans, tools, etc.).
  • Ability to use basic gardening tools such as hand trowels, pruners, hoes, and watering equipment.
  • Comfortable working around soil, insects, plants, and outdoor environmental conditions.

Volunteer Expectations

  • Arrive on time and communicate schedule changes when possible.
  • Follow organic and regenerative gardening practices used at the Inspiration Garden.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community members.
  • Demonstrate respect for the garden, tools, plants, and shared spaces.
  • Follow safety guidelines and use tools responsibly.
  • Maintain a positive, supportive, and mission-driven attitude.
  • Represent the Cibolo Center for Conservation in a respectful and welcoming manner.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Interest in gardening, conservation, and hands-on outdoor work.
  • Willingness to learn organic and regenerative gardening practices.
  • Ability to perform light to moderate physical activity outdoors.
  • Dependable, team-oriented, and attentive to detail.
  • No prior gardening experience required—training provided.
