Surveys and Research - Sisterdale Sanctuary- Grassland Survey

Grassland Vegetation Survey

Description:

Plant enthusiasts and beginners alike will survey several transects in the Bermuda grass/floodplain fields to determine vegetation types, including forbs and grasses, and native/invasive cover. This data helps researchers track changes in plant composition over time and help determine future land restoration practices. Volunteers will meet with the survey lead at 8am for a review of grass ID and survey method.

Requirements:

No experience necessary, however, participants should be prepared for bending and stooping on sometimes uneven terrain. There will be exposure to sun, wind, occasional rain, and the potential for insect bites. Volunteers may be required to download a survey app for data collection during the survey.

Recommended Attire and Gear:

Appropriate clothing for walking through prairie vegetation is required, such as:

  • Closed-toed shoes or boots

  • Long pants

  • Hat

  • Sun protection

  • Refillable water bottle
