Surveys and Research - WFR Week - Aquatic Survey (Fish, Flow, Macroinvertebrates)
Aquatic Species Survey
Description:
Community scientists assess stream flow and sample macroinvertebrates, fish, and other aquatic organisms alongside biologists from the San Antonio River Authority (SARA). The macroinvertebrate samples taken from the creek bed are stored in the Cibolo Nature Center's Ecology Lab, where they are later identified. Macroinvertebrates are biological indicators of water quality.
No pre-qualifications are needed for the fieldwork, but the opportunity to assist with sampling within the creek usually occurs. Be prepared to enter the water.
Identification of Macroinvertebrates:
It helps to have a working knowledge or familiarity with the different classes of macroinvertebrates, but this is not a requirement. It’s a skill that can be developed over time with hands-on experience. Training will be provided to those interested. This training would take place at a later date, following Wildlife Field Research week. If you are interested, please contact Sarah Vergara at sarahv@cibolo.org
