Ant Survey


Description:

To conduct the ant survey, community scientists will:

  1. Place bait on small plastic dishes along a transect.

  2. Leave bait out for 30 minutes to several hours.

  3. Collect trays in plastic bags for refrigeration.

  4. Identify and count specimens using stereo microscopes (available on Friday).

This survey allows researchers to monitor and evaluate ant species diversity in the prairie ecosystem.


Requirements:

  • Must be able to walk unaided on uneven terrain.

  • Do not participate if you are allergic to insect stings, as ant bites are possible.


Recommended Attire:

  • Closed-toe shoes or boots

  • Long pants

  • Hat

  • Weather-appropriate, outdoor clothing (prairie environment)

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Cibolo Nature Center

  • 140 City Park Rd., Boerne, Tx

  • Park in the Nature Center parking lot, meet team on the Visitor Center porch
