Prairie Vegetation Review and Survey

Description:

Plant enthusiasts and beginners alike will survey several transects in the prairie to determine vegetation types, including forbs and grasses, and to assess ground cover. This data helps researchers track changes in plant composition over time and better understand prairie ecosystem health. Volunteers will meet with the survey lead at 7am for a review of grass ID and survey method. 

Requirements:

None; however, participants should be prepared for bending and stooping on sometimes uneven terrain. There will be exposure to sun, wind, occasional rain, and the potential for insect bites.

Recommended Attire and Gear:

Appropriate clothing for walking through prairie vegetation is required, such as:

  • Closed-toed shoes or boots

  • Long pants

  • Hat

  • Sun protection

  • Refillable water bottle
