Midsomer Norton Library - IT Guides

What is a Library IT Guide Volunteer?

As an IT Guide Volunteer you will help support members of the public to use IT equipment.

What will I be doing?

The Library Service is dynamic and exciting and provides internet access to the public via on-site computers and free Wi-Fi. You do not need to be a tech genius, you just need to be patient, use IT as part of your day to day life and be able to share your understanding with members of the public who may need some help to use IT within our Libraries.

You may be located at any of our Library sites according to where would suit you best and will discuss with your Supervisor how your role will help support the public at their location.

As an IT Guide Volunteer you can expect to:

  • Provide basic training or support, for example; printing, scanning, hints/tips, using Microsoft programmes, setting up an email address and locating a website
  • Encourage members of the public to ‘have a go’ at practical computing, thereby building their confidence
  • Refer people on to further sources of help
  • Support customers to use IT to access Library services: self-book P.N. sessions. using SS kiosks, download E-books, E-audio Books, use the Libraries West App and online catalogue
  • Understand and support Equal Opportunities
  • Undergo induction training and familiarisation where relevant

You are NOT expected to:

  • Give advice or guidance beyond how to use the IT equipment and how to use Library Service Specific application
  • Volunteers will not provide advice on how to complete on-line forms such as benefit applications or handle any user’s financial information

Is it for me?

This role will suit you if you:

  • Have knowledge of normal Office/Computer packages such as Word, Excel and Microsoft Access, etc
  • Have knowledge of scanning and printing
  • Have knowledge of using web browsers
  • Have knowledge of different search engines, and use of their advanced search facilities
  • Are used to dealing with different groups of people
  • Have good teaching and communication skills
  • Are sympathetic to the Library environment and the role of Libraries in Society
  • Understand the importance of safeguarding

Why should I volunteer with you?

For anyone who enjoys, or wants experience in, working with a broad range of people and helping with IT this is a great opportunity to gain skills whilst helping your local community, meeting new people, building confidence and having fun. We offer full training for the role and regular meet-ups with managers, as well as opportunities for personal development with B&NES Council's 'LearningZone'.

As a service we recognise the importance of volunteers in helping us to deliver a full programme of events so we reimburse travel costs and our friendly staff offer support, guidance and a warm welcome.

The schedule for this activity will be agreed with the volunteer
