Are you passionate about art, ideas and conversation?

Do you love sharing stories and connecting people with culture?

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is seeking enthusiastic, curious and committed individuals to join our Volunteer Guide team.

As a Volunteer Guide, you will play a vital role in enriching the visitor experience—leading engaging tours, facilitating thoughtful discussions and helping audiences connect more deeply with works of art from across Australia and around the world.

Why become a Volunteer Guide?

  • Be part of one of Australia’s leading cultural institutions
  • Receive in-depth training in art history, interpretation and public engagement
  • Develop public speaking and communication skills
  • Join a vibrant, supportive community of fellow volunteers
  • Enjoy ongoing learning opportunities, lectures and behind-the-scenes insights

What we’re looking for:

  • A genuine interest in art and culture
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A willingness to learn and participate in comprehensive training
  • Availability to commit to regular guiding shifts
  • An open, inclusive approach to engaging diverse audiences

Volunteer Guides contribute to tours for audiences across the Art Gallery’s historic Naala Nura building and contemporary Naala Badu building. Your voice could help shape someone’s first meaningful encounter with art.

If you’re ready to deepen your own understanding of art while helping others discover theirs, we’d love to hear from you.

Art Gallery of NSW Mission Statement

The Art Gallery of New South Wales acknowledges the traditional custodians of the country on which it is located, the Gadigal of the Eora nation, and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters and culture.

From here. For all.
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of Australia’s flagship art museums and the state’s leading visual arts institution.
As the state art museum, we’re here to champion artists and to serve the widest possible audience as a centre of excellence for the collection, preservation, documentation, interpretation and display of Australian and international art, and a forum for scholarship, art education and the exchange of ideas.
Our vision is to be a beacon for art in Australia, reflecting and exploring perspectives from our place in the world. Our purpose is to enrich lives through meaningful encounters with art.
In 2021 we celebrated our 150th anniversary, and in 2022 we completed our significant expansion through the Sydney Modern Project.
This transformation of the Art Gallery creates a new art museum campus across two buildings connected by a public art garden in one of the world’s most beautiful cultural precincts.
In 2024, the two buildings have been given Aboriginal language names: Naala Badu for our north building and Naala Nura for our south building.
