About Us
The Esperanza Center is a comprehensive resource center whose mission is to welcome immigrants by offering hope, compassionate services, and the power to improve their lives. Since 1963, immigrants from all over the world have trusted the center to help them navigate life in a new country. Our dedicated staff and volunteers provide services related to education, health care, immigration legal matters, family reunification, and general community support to thousands of immigrants each year.
Esperanza Center Health Services (ECHS) provides free medical and dental services to uninsured immigrants in the metropolitan Baltimore region who do not qualify for government-sponsored health insurance. The clinic offers no-cost quality primary and preventive care for adults and children. Services are provided by dedicated volunteers and staff, in partnership with Johns Hopkins Medical Institute. These services range from adult and pediatric primary care, adult dental care, on-site laboratory services, and specialized clinics.
Description
The Volunteer Medical Interpreter will facilitate communication between ECHS patients and their healthcare provider by providing high-quality interpretation services. This volunteer position provides valuable experience in medical interpretation.
Tasks
- Listen carefully to patient and their healthcare provider
- Accurately interpret information for patients and healthcare providers without additions, substitutions, omissions, side conversations, or volunteered opinions
- Maintain client confidentiality​ at all times
Requirements
- 18 years of age or older
- High proficiency in English and Spanish.
- Commitment to diverse work environment
- Background check required
Physical Demands
- Able to remain in stationary position for majority of volunteer time
- Able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information with staff, patients, and other volunteers.
- Frequently moves about the inside of the office to access exam rooms, office machinery, office supplies, etc.
- Sometimes operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as copy machines and computer printers
Schedule
This is an in-person volunteer position with Esperanza Center Health Services at 430 S Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21231. Volunteers will be asked to commit to volunteering for approximately 12 weeks for at least 3-4 hours/week during Health Services business hours (Monday-Thursday, 9am-6pm). Exact schedule will need to be determined in coordination with Health Services Manager.
**Please note that the first step in the process of becoming a Health Services Medical Interpreter Volunteer is to attend a Volunteer Information Session, which can be scheduled through the volunteer application**
