The Esperanza Center is a comprehensive resource center whose mission is to welcome immigrants by offering hope, compassionate services, and the power to improve their lives. Since 1963, immigrants from all over the world have trusted the center to help them navigate life in a new country. Our dedicated staff and volunteers provide services related to education, health care, immigration legal matters, family reunification, and general community support to thousands of immigrants each year.
Description
Client Services is seeking Spanish-speaking volunteers who can be contacted to cover our front desk when our Administrative Assistant is out of the office. This volunteer position provides valuable experience in customer service and collaboration, and scheduling. It can also give volunteers practice in using Spanish in a professional setting.
Tasks
- Greet clients entering the building
- Help direct clients where they need to go
- Check clients in
- Communicate with Administrative Assistants
- Answer client questions
- Unlock door for clients (using air phone)
- Help clients schedule appointments as needed
- Help clients fill out intake forms
- Other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older
- Proficient in Spanish
- Conversational in English
- Strong customer service skills
- Strong active listening skills
- Demonstrates patience and compassion
- Committed to diverse work environment
- Background check required
Physical Demands
- Able to remain in stationary position for majority of volunteer time
- Able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information with staff and clients
- Able to observe details at close range (within a few feet of observer)
- Frequently operates office productivity machinery such as a computer, desk phone, air phone, scanner, copy machine, and computer printer.
- Sometimes positions self to maintain files
- Sometimes moves about the inside of the office to access office machinery, office supplies, file cabinets, etc.
Location and Schedule
This is an in-person volunteer position with Client Services at the Esperanza Center, 430 S Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21231. Volunteers will be contacted on an as-needed basis to schedule coverage. Volunteers would likely be working during our regular building hours (Monday-Thursday 8:30am-4:30pm and Fridays 8:30am-2:30pm). There may be some opportunities to volunteer in the evening or on the weekends if the building is scheduled to be open outside of regular hours. Time slots may be negotiated and may vary depending on program needs and availability.
