Volunteer Driver

Volunteer Driver supports Summit clients by providing safe and reliable transportation to health and wellness programs, helping them access the care and support that enhances their wellbeing. Occasionally drive our community partners, volunteers, and supplies as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Safely transport clients to scheduled Summit Health & Wellness program activities or events. (I.e., community events, special outings, group activities, and appointments). Occasionally drive our community partners, volunteers, and supplies as needed.
  • Coordinate transportation schedules with the Volunteer Coordinator for clients using organizational vehicles.
  • Plan efficient routes for all trips.
  • Respond to special or last-minute driving requests as needed.
  • Ensure all passengers follow safety guidelines while in the vehicle (guidelines for passengers are provided to all individuals).
  • Complete mileage logs, submit monthly vehicle logs to Volunteer Coordinator, and maintain accurate records.
  • Purchase necessary vehicle supplies (e.g., fuel, windshield washer fluid, oil) using the credit card provided and submit all signed receipts to the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and report any damage or safety concerns.
  • Complete Vehicle Daily Circle pre and post trip inspections and follow all safety policies. Report any vehicle damage or safety concerns to the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Follow all Summit Passenger Vehicle and Safety Policies.
  • Communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator regarding weather-related- cancellations.
  • Regulate heating/cooling and ventilation for passenger comfort.
  • Must comply with all responsibilities in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Transportation, Highway Traffic Act, all Summit Policies and Procedures and agree to treat health and safety with a high priority while volunteering at Summit.
  • Notify the Volunteer Coordinator at least two hours before a shift if unable to attend.

Duties:

  • Represent Summit in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator for any concerns related to client wellbeing or safety immediately. Volunteers are not to take on a professional counselling role.
  • Identify and communicate potential physical safety risks and advise the Volunteer Coordinator or other staff.
  • Report any vehicle damage or safety concerns to the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Promote a positive, confidential, and supportive environment for Summit clients.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Current valid G-Class Ontario driver’s license is required.
  • Clean driving record – Driver’s Abstract is required.
  • Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening is required.
  • Working knowledge of safe and efficient vehicle operations.
  • Experience working/volunteering in social services or mental health related settings is considered an asset.
  • Lived experience with mental health and/or addictions is considered an asset.

Shifts

The role requires scheduled but flexible shifts, approximately four hours of availability per week, and a minimum six-month commitment.

Working Conditions

Volunteer Drivers may support individuals who occasionally experiencing emotional distress or heightened behaviours, and must remain calm, communicate respectfully, and follow safety procedures as needed. This role requires the physical ability to operate a vehicle safely, assist clients entering and exiting the vehicle, and respond appropriately to various situations.
