Pioneers Project - Leaky Dam Building
A practical task building leaky dams at ENPA's Driver Farm, near Challacombe.
A leaky dam is a natural flood management method, which involves placing branches and twigs across small waterways between a framework of upright posts. These dams help slow the rush of water off the moorland in times of heavy rain, meaning less soil is eroded from the moor.
We will be concentrating on constructing a series of these dams along a deep drainage ditch dug orignally in John Knight's era to drain the moor as part of his plans to turn barren moorland into productive agricultural land.
Please note: Access to the dam building site involves a 1km walk across uneven and sloping ground, carrying hand tools and equipment.
