An overview of our Volunteer Roles

Allied Health (Dietetics, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Psychology)

There are a varying number of allied health department opportunities and we encourage you to apply within. Role duties may include:  

  • Literature reviews as required for department projects
  • Development of education materials and resources for department use
  • Assist in data collection for routine audits and analysis
  • Assist with administration tasks as designated eg. photocopying, filing, laminating, booking of rooms

Administration

Volunteers who offer administration support can undertake a range of duties including making up of patient information packs, assisting in mail outs, binding, laminating, photocopying and filing.

Discharge Lounge

Working in the discharge lounge is an opportunity for volunteers to ensure patients in the lounge feel comfortable and relaxed by offering tea and coffee, provide light conversation and reassure those patients who may be nervous leaving the hospital. 

 

Driver

The role of the Volunteer Driver is to provide a safe and comfortable transport service for clients attending their appointments. The volunteer is to provide an excellent and helpful service to patients.

Emergency Department Support

Volunteers assisting in the Emergency Department can expect to undertake the following tasks within their shift:

  • Checking in with the Ward Clerk  or Nurse in Charge for instructions for the shift
  • Sitting with patients and their families to chat and listen
  • Offering and providing a cup of tea and or sandwiches for approved patients and families
  • Offering blankets and newspapers for approved patients and families
  • Liaising between patients and their families and the nurses for non-medical requests or concerns

Hand Massage

The role of the Hand Massage Volunteer is to provide a form of touch therapy and a way of adding value to a patients care. The volunteer must always be polite, courteous, patient, helpful and understanding in assisting patients and visitors as required.

Music

Seeking professional musicians to play an instrument in various wards that provides easy listening and enhances the hospital experience for Epworth patients and visitors. 

Newspaper Delivery

The role of the volunteer assisting in Newspaper Delivery is to deliver to patients in wards either newspapers, library books or magazines (based on hospital site). Each volunteer is to demonstrate high levels of customer service and professionalism as they enter a patients room and provide an excellent and helpful service to patients, visitors and staff.

Patient Support

The role of the Volunteer Patient Visitor is to support patients admitted into a ward and embraces the highest principles of customer service. The volunteer must always be polite, courteous, patient, helpful and understanding in assisting patients and visitors as required.

Uniform Shop

High levels of customer service required to help Epworth staff in the ordering of uniforms and as well as monitoring the stock in shop. 

Wayfinding / Concierge

Wayfinding

The Concierge Wayfinding volunteer is often the first point of contact for Epworth patients and visitors. The role embraces the highest principles of customer service, with volunteers providing information, support and guidance to patients and visitors. A Concierge Wayfinding volunteer must always be polite, patient, helpful and understanding in assisting patients and visitors. Concierge Wayfinding volunteers are required to be available at a central location/s (determined by the hospital) to greet/support patients and visitors as they first enter the facility.

Wig Salon

The role of the Wig Salon Volunteer is to offer high levels of customer service by discussing the patients needs for the day, assisting patients with wig fitting and wig choices and informing the patient of wig care and providing wig education thoroughly.
