Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any specific qualifications or experience required?

Each of our volunteer roles comes with its own set of specific requirements. To ensure you find a position that aligns with your skills, interests, and availability, we encourage you to explore the detailed information provided for each role.

You can find these details by following the links below. This will help you understand what each position entails and what is expected, allowing you to make an informed decision about where you would like to contribute.

How flexible are the volunteering hours?

At Uniting, we understand the importance of flexibility, especially for our valued volunteers. Whether you're looking to volunteer weekly or on a fortnightly basis, we offer a range of options to fit your schedule. Depending on the role you're interested in, you can choose to volunteer before work, during weekdays, or even on weekends.

Our system is designed to accommodate your availability, allowing you to select the times that work best for you. We strive to make volunteering not just a fulfilling experience, but also one that is convenient and adaptable to your lifestyle.

Do I need to undergo any training before I start volunteering?

We place great importance on ensuring that all our volunteers are well-prepared for their roles. To facilitate this, we require you to complete the e-learning modules associated with the role you're interested in. These modules are designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform your role effectively.

Additionally, you will be offered a site induction to familiarise you with the working environment and procedures. To further enhance your readiness, we also provide a 'buddy shift,' where you'll work alongside an experienced volunteer. This comprehensive approach ensures that you are fully equipped and confident as you embark on your volunteering journey with us.

Can I volunteer at different locations?

We offer a variety of roles across Uniting, catering to different skills and interests. If you are considering exploring other roles within our community, we are more than happy to discuss the specific requirements of these new opportunities with you. Rest assured, much of the information you have already provided in your initial application form will be transferred to any new role you take on.

Depending on the specific nature of the new role, there may be a need for some additional training or the provision of further information. Our goal is to make the transition to a new role as seamless as possible, ensuring you are fully prepared and supported every step of the way.

Are there opportunities for advancement or taking on more responsibilities?

Our volunteer program not only offers valuable experience but also potential pathways for growth and leadership. For those showing dedication and aptitude, there's the opportunity to progress to 'Lead Volunteer' roles. In these positions, we provide additional leadership training and support to help you develop further skills and take on more responsibilities.

Additionally, we believe in recognising the talents within our volunteer community. When new staff roles arise, we inform our volunteers and encourage those with the appropriate skills and experience to apply. While employment cannot be guaranteed, we are committed to supporting our volunteers in their professional aspirations. It's worth noting that several of our current staff members started their journey with Uniting as volunteers, embodying the progression and opportunities that can arise from dedicated volunteer work.
