4 - Office/Administrative/Technical Activities - Make Special Treats for Pups

These are homemade high-value training treats that we call "special treat". They are shaped into small balls and frozen for our ABEL trainers to use while training. The balls should hold together but be soft and pliable so bits can be pinched off easily.

We need about 6 bags/batches at the end of each month to deliver to the ABEL programs. This opportunity is set up for 6 people to each make 1 batch. If you can make a larger batch, let us know and we'll sign you up as a "group" of as many people as batches you can make. That will help us keep from being overrun by special treat!

Shift time is not important. Shift day is also typically not important. Delivering treat on an earlier day will always be fine. Delivering treat on a later day will usually be fine but it's helpful to let us know it will be arriving later.

Special Treat Recipe

Ingredients
This recipe size will fit in a small food processor.

  • 2c cooked chicken liver (very little liquid), or other meat - you can substitute canned tuna if it is easier
  • 2 ½ c bread flour
  • 2 T tapioca flour
  • 2 t canola oil

For a larger batch, use a 4x recipe (makes ~8 lb which fits well in four 32 oz yogurt containers). Divide total ingredients into batch appropriate for your food processor.

  • (4) 20 oz. frozen chicken livers (can substitute other meat or canned tuna)
  • 10 c bread flour
  • 8 T tapioca flour
  • 8 t canola oil

Preparation Steps

  1. Thaw & cook chicken liver in microwave.
  2. Separate ingredients into batches appropriate to the size of your food processor.
  3. Put meat, tapioca flour, oil, and ~3/4 of the bread flour into the food processor and process.
  4. Continue to add bread flour in small amounts until dough resembles cooked ground beef.
  5. If dough is too dry or dries out quickly - add a *touch* (1/4t) more oil. (Please use sparingly. Too much oil is bad for puppy tummies.) A little bit of oil goes a loooong way!
  6. If dough is too wet - add flour in 1/4c increments and check until right consistency.

Packaging

  1. Label container(s) with the date made (this helps us use the oldest treats first so none go bad -- it's hard to label bags after they are filled).
  2. Roll special treat into balls -- aim for about the diameter of a quarter or a little bigger.
  3. Put special treat into labeled containers -- ziploc bags are great because we can send them into prison but yogurt containers also work and we can transfer as needed.
  4. Deliver immediately to EENP or freeze for later delivery.

Deliver to EENP:
2401 Old NC 86
Hillsborough, NC 27278

Mondays are ideal. We are generally at the office all day but given the need to keep the treat cold it is best to text or call us (919-408-7292) to be sure we're in before you make a trip over!
