4 - Other Activities - Provide Diabetic Scent Samples

We need fresh diabetic scent samples monthly to send into our prison programs for training our dogs. We use at least 15-20 fresh samples each month. If you have diabetes, you can help us out with this!

You will need:

  • Ziploc bags
  • Paper towels or gauze pads
  • Marker and label

  1. Confirm an out of range blood glucose. We train on samples from blood glucose over 200 or under 70
  2. Label your bag! You can prep a number of bags ahead of time if you want. Use permanent marker to record:
    • your initials
    • the date of the sample
    • your blood glucose reading
  3. Chew on 3 or more (if you are able) individual pieces (2-3" square) of paper towel. You want the pieces to be well saturated with saliva. You can put all of the samples from one reading in one bag -- we will separate them later to go to the different prison programs.
  4. Freeze samples until you can bring them to EENP.

We appreciate a variety of readings and we never have too many samples!

We use diabetic scent as the basis for training all of our medical alert dogs, even for other conditions.

This shift is entered for the third Friday of every month but the timing is not critical. Just let us know when you want to bring samples by so we can be sure someone will be in the office to receive them. Thank you!
