4 - Office/Administrative/Technical Activities - Cook Bland Diet

Volunteers cook bland diet to help our pups get through episodes of gastrointestinal distress. This blend of plain chicken and plain white rice usually helps calm the GI tract in a day or two.

Drop off is listed on Monday morning at 2401 Old NC 86, Hillsborough NC 27278 but any time during the week should be fine as well. Just let us know in advance if you plan to drop off later in the week so we can plan for what we are sending out to the prison programs.

Bland Diet Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 C plain chicken breast or canned chicken breast (unsalted)
  • 3 C plain white rice

You can adjust the amounts according to how much bland diet you want to make.

Preparation Steps:

  1. Cook plain white rice and make sure it's dry when you finish. Making it dry individual pieces, and not mush.
  2. Boil some plain chicken until it's done all the way through. (NO BONES)
  3. Shred the chicken into small pieces. A cuisinart or similar works very well.
  4. Mix the chicken and rice together in a zip lock bag(s) and label with number of cups in the bag and the date made.

Notes:

Please do not cook any other rice than plain white rice, and also don't cook any bones in the chicken (that's why we recommend chicken breast). Thank you.

It's best if bland diet is immediately bagged, labeled (with the date made and number of cups of diet), and frozen in 1-2 day portions so trainers can thaw just a day or two at a time. A typical dog would eat 2-4 cups of bland diet in a day so we often freeze into zip locks with 3 cups in each bag.
