3 - Prog: Dog Care and Training Support - Dog Wrangler and Training Room Helper
Training Room Helpers work in our training room to assist with dog training and care, chores, and facility maintenance when we have a number of dogs in the office.
Each day will vary depending on what's needed but could include:
- Helping set up the space for the day or put things away at the end of the day
- Helping with basic training for our furlough and soon-to-graduate dogs
- Assisting our dog trainer with advanced training exercises
- Helping tidy and clean up the work space or the facility (dishes, lawn mowing, watering the plants)
- Preparing training treats like frozen kongs and puppy ice
- Monitor dogs returning from ABEL while our trainers conduct public access assessments (Tue/Thu shifts that extend to 5 pm)
Helpers should expect to be working inside and out and will be helping assess and handle dogs. Levels of training for the dogs will vary, which means some dogs will not be as well trained as others. Some dogs may pull hard on the leash during training so please let us know if you would not be able to safely stay upright against a stout tug from a strong adult dog and we will plan accordingly.
Come dressed in layers appropriate for the weather so you can work comfortably indoors or outdoors, regardless of the weather.
No qualifications are needed, but minors must either be accompanied by an adult or be able to work independently and follow direction well. Shifts will be manually assigned with a preference for helpers who sign up for more shifts and show initiative when working. Assistants who come regularly are able to learn more skills and work independently. That's a huge help to us!
