Volunteer with us!!
St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii is one of the largest providers of care options for seniors and caregivers in the islands. We are a mission-driven, non-profit organization. If you are looking to volunteer as a way to give back to your community, please consider us!
Our largest opportunity is within our hospice services. We are seeking volunteers who would like to provide companionship for hospice patients in the home setting, in nursing facilities or at our inpatient unit. We also rely on volunteers to help with our fundraising events throughout the year.
Our volunteers are diverse. We have students looking to gain some experience working with patients in a healthcare system, professionals wanting to share their talents and experience, and seniors who can now devote time to their passion of helping others.
Did you know that studies find volunteering extends your life, and volunteer experience included on your resume increases your chances of getting hired? So, if you want to “Live long and Prosper” come and join our ohana to make a difference in the community. We work with your availability!

General Interests
Administration
Volunteers provide support for a variety of departments at St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii. Duties may include greeting guests, directing them to different department locations, answering general questions, answering phones, filing, assisting with mailings, and data entry.

Adult Day Care Centers
We provide a secure environment that is ideal for aging loved ones who cannot remain at home alone during the day and cannot perform all the activities of daily living, but do not need 24/7 professional care.

Volunteers at the Adult Day Care assist staff with serving meals, handing out reading materials or puzzles, overseeing bingo and other games. All while spending quality time with our community elders. |
Bereavement Support
Volunteers are needed to support our Bereavement Social Workers by assisting with monthly mailings. This team meets once a month and prepares the mailings to our families who are in the grieving process. Other volunteers may assist with support groups and phone calls.
Craft Projects
What is your talent?

There are many opportunities to get involved that enhance the lives of those we care for and their families that are not part of our regular program. Volunteers can help with decorating and assembling favors for special events such as ornaments for our tree lighting ceremony. Volunteers may also assemble crafts for our contracted facilities or to distribute to patients.
If you have special skills such as quilting, crafting, card making, etc., we could use your help.
Franciscan Vistas
Finding affordable housing is a challenge for many Hawaii seniors, especially those with limited incomes. Franciscan Vistas Ewa is a vibrant, affordable senior independent living community in historic Ewa Villages with amenities that rival those of luxury retirement communities. Volunteers can help residents of Franciscan Vistas by maintaining the grounds, assisting with exercise classes, arts and crafts and events in the community center.
Hospice

Volunteers are vital members of the hospice interdisciplinary team. People are called to this service for a variety of reason. Some want to give back to the community, some believe in the hospice mission, others have been personally impacted by the warmth of hospice care at a difficult time in their loved one’s life. Students going into the medical field learn how to nurture patients and families at the end-of-life journey. Something you can’t learn from a textbook. Whatever the motives, our Hospice Volunteers are greatly appreciated by staff, patients and families. After a free comprehensive volunteer training, you may decide on the type of volunteering you are interested in and how much time you want to give to hospice. Some of the services hospice volunteers provide are:
- Companionship
- Respite for the caregiver
- Visits to patients at nursing facilities or care homes
- Reading, music, card games, crafts, prayer
- Massage Therapy
- Healing Touch
- Gentle Touch
- Pet Therapy
- Bereavement Support
If you are feeling the calling to serve as a Hospice volunteer, we can find a special place for you based on your availability.
Massage Therapy
Volunteers who are willing to share their professional talent of massage therapy can volunteer in the home setting, nursing facilities and our inpatient unit. The gift of massage is frequently requested as it enhances the quality of life for our patients and provides extra comfort for those who are bedbound. Volunteers must be licensed in the state of Hawaii.
Our Lady of Kea'au
As an extension of service to the community, Our Lady of Kea`au volunteers reach out to those in need in Waianae. Many families in Hawaii do not have homes because of circumstances beyond their control, and St. Francis Healthcare System is doing its part to alleviate this growing problem. Our Lady of Kea`au prepares and serves hot meals every week for those in Pai`olu Homeless Shelter and at the Waianae Boat Harbor.
Volunteers assist with outreach service to the homeless & disadvantaged by cooking, running errands, administrative office support, landscaping or pool maintenance.

Pet Therapy
In the hospice setting, pet therapy uses the natural bond between humans and animals to provide comfort, peace and soothing companionship to terminally ill.

Pets must be certified and have documentation of current vaccinations.
Perform Music
Music is not only soothing, it can bring back fond memories and elicit positive emotions from our elders.

Volunteers who want to share their gift of music or vocal talents can volunteer in two ways. As a music only volunteer, you can play/sing gentle music in the recreational area at our in-patient unit or one of our contracted facilities. Some music volunteers want a closer connection with our patients so they choose to become hospice trained as well. This allows them to visit patients in their homes or facility bedrooms to provide much appreciated comfort at bedside.
Preschool

Our preschool curriculum combines various Montessori teaching principles and materials with traditional preschool methods that include teacher-directed, theme-based lessons and creative play. Parents are always delighted to find out their child is learning something new every day.
Caring is evident in all that we offer at St. Francis Preschool, where every day is a celebration of each student’s accomplishments and contributions.
Volunteers should enjoy interacting with children, singing songs, making arts and crafts. They might be asked to help supervise the children while on the playground, assist at meal time, and some office tasks.
Senior Community Center
Our new and evolving Senior Community Center (SCC) is in need of volunteer hospitality specialists to create a welcoming atmosphere and promote our organization to the general public.
Tasks may include:
- Greet guests and answer general questions about the Center or St. Francis Healthcare Systems of Hawai`i
- Assist guests by providing orientation to the SCC such as the location of restrooms, meeting rooms, kitchen lab, and fitness studio.
- Coordinate with SCC staff to assist with set up and close down of meetings or activities as needed.
- Light administrative tasks

Special Events

Volunteers are needed for our annual special events such as Light Up a Memory Tree Lighting Ceremony at Christmas, Rose for Remembrance, St. Marianne Cope Walk and others. A wide range of duties can include set-up, decorating, greeting, serving food, and clean up. Can also include socializing, participating in the activities and overall fun times with great people.
