Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer with BJC Hospice. We are truly grateful that you are considering this opportunity to share your time and care with our patients and families. Before you submit your application, we want to share some important information to help you decide if our team is the right fit for you. Please review carefully!

How our program is organized
BJC Hospice is made up of four different branch offices: Greater St. Louis, Illinois-Metro East, Sullivan, and Farmington. Your application will be reviewed by the branch that serves the area where you live. Each branch may offer different volunteer opportunities and follow their own guidelines based on community needs.

What our volunteers do
Most of our volunteers work directly with patients and families. These roles may include:

  • Spending time with patients as a companion
  • Providing short periods of caregiver relief
  • Helping with light, routine household tasks during in-home visits
  • Assisting patients and families with creative legacy projects, such as writing, art, or memory-making
  • Other tasks based on patient/family-specified needs or requests

Almost all of our patients live at home or in a nursing home. Some patients with acute needs are admitted to Evelyn's House.

Age requirements
To ensure safety and consistency of care, volunteers must be 21 years or older to work directly with patients and families. If you are under 21, there may still be opportunities available, but they are limited and vary by season and branch needs.

Transportation requirement
Volunteers must have their own car and valid car insurance in order to move forward in the application process. Exceptions can be made if a volunteer is unable to drive due to a disability; please let us know if this is the case so that we can discuss accommodations.

Time commitment
Because our patients and families rely on consistent support, we ask that volunteers:

  • Strive for volunteering 2 to 4 hours per week or every other week
  • Serve for at least one year
  • Complete a required minimum of 30 volunteer hours per calendar year

Volunteering in hospice care is deeply meaningful work, and we understand that applying is a thoughtful decision. We encourage you to review your application carefully and submit it only if it truly reflects your availability and intent. Your honesty helps us build a reliable, compassionate volunteer team and serve our community well.

Please know that our team carefully reviews each application to ensure we can provide the best possible care to our patients and families. We appreciate your understanding that not all applicants may be accepted based on current needs and requirements. If we move forward with your application, you will receive an email within 5 business days about our onboarding process. In some cases, you may need to check your spam folder for this message.

Thank you again for your interest and for considering this special role.
