Patient Support - Bear's Den Support
Description (New Program)
The (Simply Supper’s Lemon Love) Bear’s Den, located in the Stollery Philip C. Etches Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at RAH, is a welcoming place, where families can take a break, recharge, and care for their own wellbeing. It offers snacks, a play area for children, and a comfortable environment during long and stressful days at the hospital. Volunteers provide support and assistance to these families, by participating in spontaneous play activities with siblings of NICU patients, to provide comfort and distraction. Volunteers also clean, restock and organize the kitchen area, laundry, play areas, and family seating areas.
Requirements:
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy
- Very good English communication skills, other languages an asset
- Familiarity with hospital or healthcare settings, preferred
- Minimum age of 18 yrs, preferred, mature, hospitable, proactive, and a self-starter
- Resourceful, dependable, and able to work with minimal supervision
- Physically able to: bend, reach, sit and crawl on floor with children, clean and sanitize items, carry/move less than 50 lbs, safely move cart
- Engage families in an empathetic and compassionate manner, and build rapport
- Provide a safe, judgement-free and inclusive space
- Be sensitive to the mood, mindset and energy level of families
*Second interview may be required. Must be available for a one-time training session on a weekday.
