Patient Visitation - ICU, Patient Visitor/Leisure Activity Facilitator
Description
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is looking for confident, mature individuals who have excellent interpersonal skills and can apply these special qualities to this patient visiting role. These adaptable volunteers, with superior communication skills, will provide a stimulating environment for ICU patients that can help improve patient experience and recovery.
If you have the skills to facilitate appropriate leisure activities with our ICU patients, due to your experiences with reading aloud, playing games and/or cards, playing Nintendo Wii, doing crossword puzzles or Sudoku, friendly conversation and reminiscing, this may be the role for you! Volunteers will work closely with the ICU Occupational Therapist, as well as other department staff.
Requirements
- Interest in people from all walks of life
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills, with superior English communication skills on sensitive and/or confidential issues, other languages an asset
- Ability to engage a patient that is intubated or unable to communicate verbally.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision and/or able to work as part of a team.
- Possess confidence, maturity and able to take appropriate initiative while working within assignment.
- minimum 18 years of age preferred
- Able to adapt to a variety of situations and patient personalities
- True commitment towards helping others in the spirit of volunteerism
- Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred
