Vice President (VP) of Volunteer Engagement
General Description
The Vice President of Volunteer Engagement is a new role on the 2026 PMI-LA Board of Directors established by the recently approved 2026 PMI-LA Bylaws. Candidates apply first by completing the Self-Evaluation form screening for eligibility to serve on the Board of Directors, and, if determined eligible, next by filling out and submitting the Board of Directors Candidate Application. The links to these documents are under the Nominations Page on the Chapter's website. The 2026 Board of Directors will review all applications and decide the appointment to the position by a majority vote.
All candidates must be members in good standing of PMI-LA.
Purpose
To serve in the dual role of a member of the Board of Directors and the Vice President of Volunteer Engagement of the management of the Chapter.
2026 Bylaws Description
The Vice President of Volunteer Engagement is responsible for:

Management of volunteers including overseeing volunteer recruitment as well as onboarding and transitioning volunteers and assisting with volunteer career paths.

Oversight for the volunteer management systems used for capturing, tracking, and reporting of volunteers and volunteer opportunities.

Coordinating with the Vice President of Marketing & Communications to send communications to volunteers.
Responsibilities/Accountabilities
As Member of the Board of Directors:
- Uphold fiduciary, legal, and ethical governance responsibilities in accordance with PMI-LA Bylaws and applicable regulations.

Perform and uphold all duties as specified by the PMI-LA Chapter Bylaws.

Perform and uphold all policies specified by the PMI-LA Board of Directors.
-
Actively contributes to Board-level strategic planning, prioritization, and decision-making.
-
Review, evaluate, and approve strategic partnerships, sponsorships, and outreach-related agreements with a focus on ROI, mission alignment, and long-term sustainability.

Champion a culture of accountability, transparency, and data-driven decision-making across the Chapter.

Provide thought leadership on external engagement trends, including workforce development, community partnerships, and industry alignment.

Sign Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as it pertains to Volunteer Events.
As Vice President of Volunteer Engagement:

Collaborate with the President and the Board of Directors in their role as Vice President of Volunteer Engagement.

Work with the Board of Directors to attract, retain, and motivate volunteers.

Work with the Board of Directors to create policy and procedure to support sound volunteer management practice for the Chapter’s efficient and effective functions.
-
Work with the Board of Directors to ensure all volunteer opportunities have descriptions and are posted in the volunteer management system.

Work with the Board of Directors to ensure volunteers are treated fairly and respectfully and to handle any disputes.
-
Delegate duties and execution responsibilities, but not accountability, to other members of the Board of Directors or others to support volunteer engagement as appropriate.

Manage the Chapter’s use of a volunteer management system.
-
Participate as required in the migration from the current volunteer management system, VMS/Better Impact, to PMI’s Volunteer Engagement Platform, VEP.

Maintain VMS/Better Impact until fully migrated to VEP.
-
Responsible for oversight of the Chapter’s use of VEP once it becomes the Chapters primary volunteer management system.

Maintain lists of volunteers and provide reporting of volunteer information and statistics as required.

Manage volunteer recruitment process and oversee onboarding of new volunteers for the Chapter.
-
Work with the Board of Directors to ensure they define all their volunteer opportunities and communicate their opportunities through posting in the volunteer management system and other means of communication.

Interview and vet new volunteers as required.

Work with the Board of Directors to ensure they follow up with new volunteers to bring them on board in a timely manner.

Track the status of new volunteers’ status as they go through the application process.

Organize the Volunteer Recruitment Event held in Q1, and additional volunteer recruitment events and activities as required throughout the year as needed.

Ensure volunteers sign the Confidentiality Form as part of the onboarding process and re-affirm annually by way of electronic means of keeping track of them.

Hold new volunteer orientation sessions – in person or virtual or video.

Manage volunteer recognition efforts to ensure volunteer satisfaction and retention.

Maintain communications with volunteers to gather feedback on their volunteer experience including conducting Chapter Volunteer Satisfaction surveys.

Organize special events for volunteers and offer discounts for attendance at events as appropriate.

Organize the annual Volunteer Appreciation Event in collaboration with the Board of Directors and the Awards Committee.

Track volunteer hours for Chapter recognition at the end of the calendar year and generate appreciation certificates for all volunteers.

Manage Volunteer Engagement approved budget.

Determine the Volunteer Engagement team organization structure and create volunteer members’ roles descriptions.

Produce and maintain governance documents to guide members of the Volunteer Engagement team.
-
Onboard and offboard members of the Volunteer Engagement team.
-
Develop and oversee leadership succession planning for Volunteer Engagement and ensure a smooth transition.

This Vice President position is a new position that has been created from the recent approval of the 2026 Bylaws, and it is expected that the newly named VP of Volunteer Engagement may need to create new Volunteer Engagement policies.
