VOLUNTEER OPENINGS - FIN: Director of Finance & Compliance

Purpose
To serve as the primary operational and compliance lead for the Finance Department, ensuring accurate financial reporting, policy adherence, budget management, and financial governance within PMI-LA. The Director of Finance & Compliance works under the Vice President of Finance to oversee financial activities, mitigate financial risks, and ensure compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
Responsibilities/Accountabilities
As a Key Finance & Compliance Leader:
- Ensure compliance with PMI-LA’s financial policies, regulatory requirements, and nonprofit financial best practices.
- Support financial planning, budgeting, and reporting efforts, working closely with the VP of Finance.
- Oversee financial recordkeeping and reporting processes, ensuring accuracy and integrity.
- Provide financial oversight, including transaction monitoring, reconciliations, and internal controls.
- Act as a liaison between the Finance Department and other PMI-LA teams to ensure financial transparency and alignment with organizational goals.
Financial Compliance & Risk Management:
- Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to the VP of Finance and Board of Directors.
- Monitor compliance with financial policies, grant requirements, and nonprofit financial management standards.
- Implement internal controls to mitigate financial risks and prevent fraud.
- Oversee financial audits, tax filings, and compliance reporting in collaboration with external auditors.
- Ensure proper records retention and adherence to document management policies.
Team Management & Leadership:
- Supervise the Finance Team, ensuring role clarity, accountability, and effective task distribution.
- Develop and enforce financial policies to enhance transparency and operational efficiency.
- Support onboarding and training of new finance volunteers, ensuring knowledge transfer and continuity.
- Mentor and develop Finance volunteers to support long-term succession planning.
Reporting & Financial Governance:
- Prepare financial reports and compliance updates for the VP of Finance and Board of Directors.
- Support annual budgeting and financial forecasting processes.
- Ensure proper financial tracking of sponsorships, grants, and revenue sources.
- Conduct periodic compliance and financial health assessments to support strategic decision-making.
Time Commitment
- 8-12 hours per month
Battle Rhythm (Recurring Activities & Deadlines)
Monthly:
- Submit financial reports and compliance updates to the VP of Finance.
- Ensure reconciliation of accounts and financial transactions.
- Participate in Finance Team meetings and Board discussions.
Quarterly:
- Conduct financial risk assessments and compliance reviews.
- Work with the VP of Finance to update financial policies and controls.
Annually:
- Support the creation of the annual budget and ensure alignment with PMI-LA’s strategic goals.
- Prepare for external audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance reporting.
- Conduct Finance Team succession planning to ensure continuity of operations.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Finance and compliance experience in nonprofit or professional organizations.
- Familiarity with financial software such as QuickBooks, Zoho, or similar tools.
- Strong analytical, financial risk management, and budgeting skills.
- Experience overseeing financial policies and ensuring compliance.
- Ability to lead financial teams and manage volunteers effectively.
Role-Specific Security Access
- Read & Edit Access: Financial records, compliance reports, and transaction logs.
- Approval Authority: Budget allocations, financial policies, and compliance documentation.
- Financial Systems Access: QuickBooks, Zoho, bank transactions (view-only), PayPal (for reconciliations).
