East Library Circulation Assistant

A person is shelving a book in the library.

The following volunteer positions are available at East Library:

NOTE:  Volunteer applicants should be able to commit for at least six months and be available for one of the following shifts:

Mondays - 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. 
Tuesdays - 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Wednesdays - 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Duties may include some or all of the following.

  • Holds Processor: A holds processor would unload materials (books, DVD's, etc.) from bins that come from other library locations, and place them on the holds shelf for pickup by patrons. 
  •  Shelving Assistant:  A shelving assistant would help to return items to library shelves. 
  • Pull List: A pull list is printed each day, this is a list of library materials at Library 21c, that are requested by patrons at other library locations.  The volunteer would use the list to find materials on the shelf, then remove those items from library shelves to be transferred to another location.  

Skills Required:

The volunteer who is a good fit for this assignment should be able to be physically active in the following ways for about two hours. Lift books and materials, reach to place items on work tables, carts, and shelves.  Involves reaching above head and bending to low shelf locations. 

Applicants should understand the Dewey Decimal system and use it to either shelve or find library materials. They should be proficient in alphabetizing and reading fine print on spine labels  This position is supervised by a staff member but also requires the ability to work independently.
