Program Description

 

A structured group to enhance or maintain physical abilities that provides enjoyment and socialization in a positive setting.  Residents will have the opportunity to participate in a familiar activity or to discover a new leisure interest.

 

Goal of the program is to:

 

  • Provide an opportunity to maintain and/or increase eye-hand coordination.
  • Provide an opportunity for physical activity.
  • Introduce a new leisure skill to residents.
  • Provide opportunity for competition.
  • Provide opportunity for socialization.
  • Provide opportunity for general stimulation.

 

 

Volunteer Job Description

 

 Help with set up –

 

  • Pick up bowling equipment from recreation’s storage room and take to the unit (only if the recreation staff ask to do so).
  • With the direction of the recreation staff, help to set up the bowling.

 

Help to gather residents

 

  • For the first few volunteer shifts, volunteer will follow the recreation staff to the residents’ rooms while the staff ask the residents out to bowling; then the volunteer can porter the residents to the bowling area while the staff continue to invite the other residents. 
  • The volunteer should ask the residents where they would like to sit.  
  • Go back to get other residents that have agreed to come.
  • As the volunteer become familiar with the residents, the volunteer can go and invite the residents to the bowling independently – saving the staff time.

 

Assist with the playing of the game

 

  • The volunteer may help set up the bowling pins and return the balls to the cart once they are thrown. 

 

Encourage and cheer for the residents!!  It makes the game much more exciting!
