Charlie's Food Bank - On-Site Volunteer

 

Join our team of like-minded individuals as an On-Site Volunteer with Charlie’s Food Bank and the BC SPCA!  Work in partnership with staff and volunteers to load, unload, set up, and distribute food and other donations to members of the public as well as provide support through referral to staff. Your assistance will ensure Charlie’s Food Bank operates efficiently and provides to community pet owners in need of assistance in caring for their pets.

Farm Animal Welfare Policy Researcher Assist the Science and Standards team with researching, analyzing, and comparing policies that impact farmed, wild, and companion animals in British Columbia and Canada (including municipal, provincial, or federal policies). Responsibilities Review the project brief and ask questions as needed Read and understand background information and research Research and synthesize policies from various jurisdictions Evaluate the impact of given policies on animal welfare Organize findings in a succinct manner that allows for meaningful comparisons Suggest initial conclusions from the analysis Communicate regularly with the team Requirements & Training • Must be 19+ years of age • Comfortable using computers and Microsoft Office suite, ability to conduct research online • Strong writing skills and experience with technical communications • Ability to read and understand laws, regulations, and policies • Excellent attention to detail • Education and/or experience in animal welfare, science, or public policy Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values, and strategic directions. Volunteering Conditions • Work is completed from home or another quiet location. • Comfortable seating, ergonomic setup and adequate lighting is beneficial. • Stable and secure internet connection required. • Backup plan for connectivity issues such as a mobile hotspot • Access to a private space where confidential information can be handled/viewed securely. Time Commitment • Flexible, project-based time commitment. • Minimum of 10 hours per month, ideally for at least 3-6 months. Finance & Audit Committee Member The Finance & Audit Committee (the "Committee") is a standing committee of the BC SPCA Board of Directors. The Committee assists the Board in fulfilling its oversight function over finance, accounting, audit, information technology, investments, and related risk management. Responsibilities • Financial Statements & Other Financial Information: Review quarterly statements, budget vs actual results and variance analysis, and review and recommend Board approval of key financial documents, including the Society's audited financial statements, annual operating and capital budgets, and long-term financial plans. ' External Audit: Oversee the external audit process, including selecting the auditor, reviewing audit plans, risks, fees, and annual financial statements. Evaluate auditor independence, meet with auditors (with and without management), review audit-related correspondence and policy changes, and approve any non audit work. • Risk Management, Internal Controls, and Information Systems: Ensure financial and technological risks, internal controls, and information systems ae properly designed, effectively implemented, and updated as needed. Review risk assessments, IT security, internal controls, spending authorities, and legal compliance on a regular schedule. ' Governance and Committee Support: Oversee governance matters related to borrowing, insurance, litigation, whistleblower reports, and key financial policies. Review external service providers periodically, advise on CFO selection when needed, and ensure the Board receives sufficient financial information to meet its fiduciary duties. • Investments: Annual review portfolio performance, investment strategy, and the effectiveness of the Society's investment counsel. Review and recommend updates to the investment policy statement and monitor investment results with management quarterly. Requirements & Training • Must be 19+ and a BC SPCA member in good standing. • Experience in roles such as Chartered Professional Accountant, audit partner or senior manager, CFO, Vice-President or Director of Finance, risk management professionals, and institutional investment managers. Specific skills and experience desired include some of the following: o Professional experience in finance, accounting, auditing, risk management, or financial oversight o Familiarity with non-profit financial management and reporting requirements o Strong understanding of financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis o Knowledge of audit processes, internal controls, an financial compliance o Experience working with or overseeing external auditors o Ability to assess financial risk, internal control frameworks, and organizational sustainability High level of integrity, independence, and sound judgment Strong communication and collaboration skills. • Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders (staff, leadership, auditors, investment managers). • Willingness to participate in regular meetings and contribute constructively. • Experience serving on diverse committees or boards is an asset. • Philosophical harmony with the BC SPCA's vision, mission, values, and strategic directions. Volunteering Conditions • Work is completed from home or another quiet location. Comfortable seating, ergonomic setup and adequate lighting is beneficial. Time Commitment Approximately 10-12 hours per year for meetings only; preparation time is additional. • The Committee meets virtually five times per year for approximately two hours per meeting, with members expected to review materials beforehand.
