Animal Fostering.  Foster Care volunteers give vulnerable animals a safe place to heal, grow, learn, and feel  secure. When animals need extra support, fostering provides an essential level of care that  helps them prepare for their forever home or gives them a safe place to stay before being  reunited with their families.  Responsibilities  Communicate urgently with the centre when an animal requires veterinary attention.  • Spend quality time with foster animals daily by providing enrichment activities, play, grooming/petting,  and exercise.  • Provide a suitable environment that meets the animal's needs.  • Ability to transport to/from the centre and/or veterinarian as needed.  • Complete behaviour and health reports as needed.  Requirements & Training  • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.  • Fosters, or lead fosters in a family, must be 19+ years of age and have housing where pets are permitted.  • Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to foster.  • Previous experience caring for injured/ill animals preferred.  • Open to learning new animal care and training methods.  Volunteering Conditions  • Animal Handling: Working directly with animals may involve low-stress handling, or caring for them,  which requires patience and attention to detail.  • Safety Protocols: Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. This  includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary.  • Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards such as bites, scratches, or exposure to zoonotic  diseases. Training will cover how to minimize these risks.  Time Commitment  • Approximately 1-3 hours of online training is required for entry into the foster program. Length of  training will depend upon animal type you are interested in fostering.  Attendance to an in-centre orientation or interview may be required before starting to foster.  • We request that fosters commit to being on the foster list for a minimum of 6 months after application  has been accepted.  • The length of each foster placement varies depending upon a variety of factors and can be just a  weekend, or months while an animal heals from surgery or a new mother raises her newborns.  Benefits of Volunteering  • Fostering makes a direct impact on animals in need, can bring joy to volunteers, and strengthen family  bonds. Cat Care & Wellness volunteers support cats through enrichment and by keeping their spaces clean. You’ll follow staff-guided plans, follow safety protocols, and record each interaction to help cats thrive. Responsibilities: Provide cat enrichment through mental stimulation, play & affection. Follow any/all recommended behavioural plans outlined by the staff. Assist with cleaning and disinfecting cat rooms and kennels. Clean dishes, laundry, and litter boxes, and prepare and provide food to cats. Adhere to all BC SPCA policies. Follow all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols as needed. Follow the centre’s task list for the Cat Care & Wellness position, which may require volunteers to complete cleaning tasks before interacting with available cats. Requirements & Training: Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions. Open to completing cleaning tasks prior to interacting with the animals when needed or required. Knowledge of animal behaviour is preferred. Able to follow and interpret verbal and/or written directions, signage, and procedures. Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to volunteer. Volunteering Conditions: Animal Handling: Working directly with animals may involve low-stress handling, or caring for them, which requires attention to detail. Support Workers are expected to provide the level of supervision and support needed by the volunteer while volunteering. Youth Volunteers: Youth under 12 years of age are not able to volunteer.  Youth between the ages of 12–15 can volunteer only when accompanied and supervised by a parent/guardian (19+ years old). Youth between the ages of 16–18 can volunteer with the consent of their guardians. Youth volunteering for school requirements: depending on program requirements and the number of students submitting  applications for this purpose, not all centres will be able to accommodate these requests. For more information before submitting an application, contact  your local centre and include the location and details of your school program. Note: Youth volunteering directly with animals is at the discretion of the Centre staff and may vary depending on the current animals at the Centre and other applicable factors. Not all centres are able  to accommodate youth to volunteer directly with cats. Time Commitment: Approximately 1 hour of online training is required for entry into  the volunteer program. Attendance at an in-centre orientation and/or tour may be required before starting to volunteer. Facilities Maintenance,  Join our team of as a Facilities Maintenance volunteer with the BC SPCA! In this hands-on  role, you'll support the care and upkeep of our buildings, furniture, equipment and more. From  minor repairs and safety checks to organizing storage spaces and assisting with seasonal tasks,  you'll help ensure our facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for animals, staff, and  visitors.  Responsibilities  Support general facility upkeep, including light repairs and touch-ups under staff direction.  Keep track of maintenance schedule.  Assist with assembling, repairing, or tightening kennel panels, gates, and enclosure hardware.  Help maintain and repair furniture such as desks, chairs, shelving, and storage units.  • Clean and maintain washers, dryers, and other basic appliances (lint traps, filters, exterior surfaces).  Replace simple hardware such as screws, bolts, hooks, knobs, or chair wheels.  Perform minor painting, patching, or wall-repair tasks as approved by staff.  Replace batteries in smoke detectors, clocks, and other low-risk devices.  Move or set up furniture, crates, or materials for programs, events, or operational needs.  Communicate promptly with BC SPCA staff if any concerns or issues arise, such as equipment  malfunctions or potential safety hazards.  Follow Centre's processes for volunteers checking in/out and ensuring your volunteer hours are logged.  Requirements & Training  • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.  • Age requirement of 16+ years of age: Youth 16-18 years must have their guardian complete the consent  form in the application to be able to volunteer independently.  • Strong organizational skills, including keeping tools, supplies, and work areas tidy and well-maintained.  • Previous experience/training with basic maintenance, repairs, or facility upkeep an asset.  • Ability to follow safety procedures and take direction from staff.  • Comfortable using hand tools and small power tools safely.  • Ability to identify potential hazards and notify staff.  • Strong problem-solving skills and confidence assessing simple repair needs  • Must be comfortable working around animals and navigating spaces where animals are present.  • Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to volunteer.  Volunteering Conditions  • Physical Activity: This role involves a high level of physical activity, including tasks such as shoveling  snow, lifting bags of sand or ice melt, moving bags of dirt, lawn clippings, and other hands-on outdoor  work. Grounds Maintenance.  Join our team of passionate individuals as a Grounds Maintenance volunteer with the BC  SPCA! In this role, you'll help care for our lawns, gardens, walkways, and outdoor spaces by  supporting seasonal tasks.  Responsibilities  • Assist in maintaining planter boxes, vegetable gardens, flower beds, and lawn maintenance. Clean Team.  Join our Clean Team at the BC SPCA and with every task, whether folding laundry or  sanitizing a room, help animals stay healthy, reduce risk of disease, and support their path to  adoption.  Responsibilities  • Cleaning tasks will vary by location and may include:  o General Cleaning: Sweep, mop, sanitize surfaces, and clean windows throughout the facility.  o Animal Dishes: Wash, sanitize, dry, and put away dishes. Keep the wash area clean and organized for  the next volunteer.  o Laundry: Wash and dry towels, bedding, blankets, soft toys, and other machine-washable items. Sort  dirty laundry, run loads through the washer and dryer, fold as needed, and return clean items to their  designated areas. Ensure machines and the laundry room are clean, organized, and ready for the next  use.  o Transfer Cleaning: Assist with cleaning before and after animal transfer days. Tasks may include  setting up crates, preparing to receive incoming animals, and supporting transfer-out preparations.  • Connect with Shelter staff or the Volunteer Lead at the start of each shift to prioritize tasks.  • Organize cleaning materials and notify staff when supplies are running low.  • Follow all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols as needed.  • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies.  Requirements & Training  • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.  • Open to completing a variety of tasks as needed or required.  • Organized, dependable, and can work well with others or independently.  • Able to follow and interpret verbal and written directions, signage, and procedures.  • Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to volunteer.  Volunteering Conditions  • Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. Animal Fostering.  Foster Care volunteers give vulnerable animals a safe place to heal, grow, learn, and feel  secure. Safekeepers Fostering.  The BC SPCA Safekeepers Program supports individuals and families leaving situations of  interpersonal violence by providing temporary, confidential foster care for their companion  animals. Safekeepers volunteers play a vital role in helping guardians rebuild their lives by  ensuring their animals are safe, healthy, and cared for during this transition.  Responsibilities  ' Follow all program protocols and confidentiality requirements, recognizing the sensitive nature of the  Safekeepers Program and the need to protect client privacy.  • Demonstrate awareness of boundaries, use discretion, maintain confidentiality, and comply with privacy  policies.  • Transport Safekeepers foster animals to and from local veterinary clinics for medical appointments as  required.  • Maintain clear communication with Centre staff to support the foster animals' health and complete  behaviour and health reports as needed.  ' Ensure resident animals are vaccinated, can coexist with foster animals, and can be isolated when  necessary.  • Provide a safe, healthy home environment with time for play, interaction, training, and enrichment.  • Understand that Safekeepers animals are not available for adoption and will be reunited with their  guardians when they can resume care.  Requirements & Training  • Must be in philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values, and strategic directions  • 19 years of age or older.  • Experience caring for injured or ill animals preferred; fostering experience an asset.  • Ability to provide compassionate, patient, trauma-informed care to animals who may be stressed or  adjusting to new environments.  • Understanding of interpersonal violence and trauma as they relate to animals and people is an asset.  • Able to respect boundaries, use discretion, maintain confidentiality, and follow privacy policies.  • Willing and available to attend an in-person or virtual interview.  • Willing to complete about 15 hours of online training to prepare for fostering.  • Open to learning new care and training techniques offered by the BC SPCA.  Volunteering Conditions  • Animal Handling: Working with animals may involve low-stress handling and basic care, requiring  patience and attention to detail.  • Animals Experiencing Stress or Uncertainty: Safekeepers animals may arrive anxious, fearful, withdrawn,  or overstimulated due to recent instability. Behaviour may shift as they settle in; some may hide, vocalize,  or pace. Volunteers may need to support decompression and gradual trust-building.  • Safety Protocols: Volunteers must follow safety procedures to protect themselves and the animals,  including using personal protective equipment (PPE) when needed.  • Potential Hazards: Be aware of risks such as bites, scratches, or exposure to zoonotic diseases. Training  will outline how to reduce these risks.  Time Commitment  • Willingness to complete approximately 15 hours of online training which will help you feel ready and like  the best companion you can be for animals in need.  • We request that Safekeeper fosters commit to being on the foster list for a minimum of 6 months after  application has been accepted.  • Willing to accept safekeepers placements that may range from 3-6 months until the animals guardian has  secured suitable housing.  Benefits of Volunteering  ' Fostering makes a direct impact on animals in need, can bring joy to volunteers, and strengthen family  bonds. Animal Fostering.  Foster Care volunteers give vulnerable animals a safe place to heal, grow, learn, and feel  secure. When animals need extra support, fostering provides an essential level of care that  helps them prepare for their forever home or gives them a safe place to stay before being  reunited with their families.  Responsibilities  Communicate urgently with the centre when an animal requires veterinary attention.  • Spend quality time with foster animals daily by providing enrichment activities, play, grooming/petting,  and exercise.  • Provide a suitable environment that meets the animal's needs.  • Ability to transport to/from the centre and/or veterinarian as needed.  • Complete behaviour and health reports as needed.  Requirements & Training  • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.  • Fosters, or lead fosters in a family, must be 19+ years of age and have housing where pets are permitted.  • Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to foster.  • Previous experience caring for injured/ill animals preferred.  • Open to learning new animal care and training methods.  Volunteering Conditions  • Animal Handling: Working directly with animals may involve low-stress handling, or caring for them,  which requires patience and attention to detail.  • Safety Protocols: Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. This  includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary.  • Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards such as bites, scratches, or exposure to zoonotic  diseases. Training will cover how to minimize these risks.  Time Commitment  • Approximately 1-3 hours of online training is required for entry into the foster program. Length of  training will depend upon animal type you are interested in fostering.  Attendance to an in-centre orientation or interview may be required before starting to foster.  • We request that fosters commit to being on the foster list for a minimum of 6 months after application  has been accepted.  • The length of each foster placement varies depending upon a variety of factors and can be just a  weekend, or months while an animal heals from surgery or a new mother raises her newborns.  Benefits of Volunteering  • Fostering makes a direct impact on animals in need, can bring joy to volunteers, and strengthen family  bonds. Cat Care & Wellness volunteers support cats through enrichment and by keeping their spaces clean. You’ll follow staff-guided plans, follow safety protocols, and record each interaction to help cats thrive. Responsibilities: Provide cat enrichment through mental stimulation, play & affection. Follow any/all recommended behavioural plans outlined by the staff. Assist with cleaning and disinfecting cat rooms and kennels. Clean dishes, laundry, and litter boxes, and prepare and provide food to cats. Adhere to all BC SPCA policies. Follow all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols as needed. Follow the centre’s task list for the Cat Care & Wellness position, which may require volunteers to complete cleaning tasks before interacting with available cats. Requirements & Training: Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions. Open to completing cleaning tasks prior to interacting with the animals when needed or required. Knowledge of animal behaviour is preferred. Able to follow and interpret verbal and/or written directions, signage, and procedures. Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to volunteer. Volunteering Conditions: Animal Handling: Working directly with animals may involve low-stress handling, or caring for them, which requires attention to detail. Safety Protocols: Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. This includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary. Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential  hazards such as bites, scratches, or exposure to zoonotic diseases. Training will cover how to minimize these risks. Support Workers: If you are a support worker, or wish to volunteer with your support worker, please see the following important information: Support Workers must submit their own application and complete all required steps, including online training. Support Workers are expected to provide the level of supervision and support needed by the volunteer while volunteering. Youth Volunteers: Youth under 12 years of age are not able to volunteer.  Youth between the ages of 12–15 can volunteer only when accompanied and supervised by a parent/guardian (19+ years old). Youth between the ages of 16–18 can volunteer with the consent of their guardians. Youth volunteering for school requirements: depending on program requirements and the number of students submitting  applications for this purpose, not all centres will be able to accommodate these requests. For more information before submitting an application, contact  your local centre and include the location and details of your school program. Note: Youth volunteering directly with animals is at the discretion of the Centre staff and may vary depending on the current animals at the Centre and other applicable factors. Not all centres are able  to accommodate youth to volunteer directly with cats. Time Commitment: Approximately 1 hour of online training is required for entry into  the volunteer program. Attendance at an in-centre orientation and/or tour may be required before starting to volunteer. Due to the level of training  provided for volunteers to work with cats, we request a minimum commitment of 3 months with one shift per week. Benefits of Volunteering: Sense of  pride and accomplishment in helping animals prepare for finding their forever home. Dog Care & Wellness.  Our goal is to prepare every dog for a loving home. Volunteers provide enrichment, training,  care, and support to build confidence and positive behaviours. By keeping environments clean  and following staff plans, we help ensure each dog is healthy, happy, and ready for adoption.  Responsibilities  • Provide dogs enrichment through walking, mental stimulation, play and affection.  • Encourage positive behaviours and basic leash skills through approved BC SPCA training techniques.  • Follow any/all recommended behavioural plans set by the staff.  • Record details of each interaction and report concerns/improvements to staff in a timely manner.  • Follow all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols.  • Clean kennels, dishes, laundry & toys.  • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies.  Requirements & Training  • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.  • Completion of BC SPCA's online training prior to starting to volunteer. Additional in-person and online  training may be required to volunteer with dogs on behavioural plans or needing PPE.  • Able to follow and interpret verbal and/or written directions, signage, and procedures.  • Knowledge of dog behaviour and comfortable working with dogs of all breeds and sizes (required).  • Completion of the Fear Free program on low-stress animal handling for shelter animals is highly  recommended. Approximately 6 hours to complete online.  Youth Volunteers  • Youth under 12 years of age are not able to volunteer.  • Youth between the ages of 12-15: can volunteer only when accompanied and supervised by a  parent/guardian (19+ years old).  • Youth between the ages of 16-18: can volunteer with the consent of their guardians.  • Volunteering for school requirements: depending upon the program requirements and amount of  students submitting applications not all centres will be able to accommodate these requests.
