Equine and Farm Foster




Equine and Farm Foster. Equine and Farm Program Fosters help the BC SPCA house and care for many horses and other farm animals across the province, every year. We are seeking the support of private farms, ranches and land owners, groups, riding clubs and others with the space and facilities, to help foster large animals in need of temporary care. Your assistance can help these animals recover and thrive until they find permanent homes. Responsibilities: • Provide a suitable & safe environment for the animal(s) in foster care for an unknown period of time. • Provide daily care including feeding, watering, grooming, exercising, maintaining a clean living environment and so on. • Ensure the foster animal(s) 5 freedoms are met: https://spca.bc.ca/faqs/five-freedoms Ensure other animals in the home and on the property have up-to-date vaccinations and can live safely and comfortable with other animals coming and going from the property. • Ensure you have the space and facilities to keep the foster animal isolated from other animals on the property as needed. • Be on call for emergency placement, and available to return animals when requested. • Adhere to all specialized policies directly linked to the program. • Submit weekly reports to the manager or designate and communicate urgently if the animal requires veterinary attention. • Adhere to BC SPCA policies and procedures. • Note: feed, medical care, and other costs are assessed and paid by the BC SPCA on a case-by-case basis. Requirements & Training: • Dependable and committed with the ability to work independently. • Experience working with animals that may have experienced trauma or neglect. • Patience & empathy. • Positive reinforcement, evidence-based methods of animal handling, training and care. • Understand the importance of discretion and confidentiality. Specific knowledge and experience with horses and/or one or more species of other farm animals. • Must have existing infrastructure appropriate for the species you wish to foster. This may include but is not limited to appropriate housing such as coupes, stalls, paddocks, pastures, feed and water systems. • A site visit by a staff member may be required before final approval is given to foster for this program. Volunteering Conditions: • Indoor and Outdoor Settings: Volunteers may work both indoors and outdoors, depending on the tasks. Indoor settings include animal care areas, offices, and medical facilities, while outdoor work might involve handling and care of the animals. • Weather Conditions: Outdoor tasks may require working in various weather conditions, including rain,snow, ice, or heat. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared for seasonal changes. • Lifting and Moving: Volunteers may need to lift or move supplies, equipment, or animals, which can require physical strength and stamina. • Standing and Walking: Many roles involve long periods of standing or walking, particularly when interacting with animals. • Animal Handling: Working directly with animals may involve low-stress handling, or caring for them,which requires patience and attention to detail. • Safety Protocols: Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. This includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary. • Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards such as bites, scratches, or exposure to zoonotic diseases. Training will cover how to minimize these risks. Time Commitment: • Care for a specific foster animal may last only days or weeks, but we request fosters be part of our program for 6 months or longer. • At least 2 hours per day focused time with the animal(s). May require more depending on the type of animal and its specific needs. Equine and Farm Hauler




Equine and Farm Hauler. Join our team of passionate animal lovers as a volunteer hauler for our Equine and Farm Program. Work in partnership with staff and volunteers to ensure that animals taken into our care, are safely transported to one of our locations or another approved foster facility. You will drive animals from a pick-up location to a drop-off location, in order to ensure they receive the care they need, in a timely fashion. Responsibilities: • Transport horses or other farm animals to facilities where they will receive the care they require, including veterinary clinics or foster facilities. • Drive animals on short hauls (in the community/region) or longer hauls (across BC) and possibly wait on standby for a few hours on-site before loading occurs. • Pick up of animals from a humane officer, that have been seized and surrendered animals, and/or are part of a Large Scale Animal Intake, or municipal contract support for farm animals-at-large. • Help handle, load and unload horses or farm animals. • Ensure animals are transported in a safe and secure manner . • Adhere to BC policies and procedures. Additional Information: • Costs are addressed on a case-by-case basis. At a minimum, fuel costs are covered. Donated time and services are appreciated. Requirements & Training: • Must provide proof of a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence and an ICBC Driver's Record. • Your own vehicle and trailer with valid insurance for both. • Trailer/vehicle inspection record if commercial. • Good customer service skills. • Physically fit and able to lift up to 50 lbs. • Familiar with your community, region, and confident with navigation when transporting to other areas of BC. • Panels/chutes are an asset but not required.Must be in philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values, and strategic directions Volunteering Conditions: • Indoor and Outdoor Settings: Volunteers may work both indoors and outdoors, depending on the tasks. This includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary. • Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards associated with driving and those related to working with animals such as bites, scratches, or exposure to zoonotic diseases. Training will cover how to minimize these risks. Time Commitment: • This is an on call role. The frequency of hauling requests is varied and generally infrequent. • Be willing and able to commit to the program for a minimum of 6 months. Responsibilities Communicate urgently with the centre when an animal requires veterinary attention. • Spend quality time with foster animals daily by providing enrichment activities, play, grooming/petting, and exercise. • Provide a suitable environment that meets the animal's needs. • Ability to transport to/from the centre and/or veterinarian as needed. • Complete behaviour and health reports as needed. Requirements & Training • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions. • Fosters, or lead fosters in a family, must be 19+ years of age and have housing where pets are permitted. • Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to foster. • Previous experience caring for injured/ill animals preferred. • Open to learning new animal care and training methods. Clean Team




Clean Team. Join our Clean Team at the BC SPCA and with every task, whether folding laundry or sanitizing a room, help animals stay healthy, reduce risk of disease, and support their path to adoption. Responsibilities • Cleaning tasks will vary by location and may include: o General Cleaning: Sweep, mop, sanitize surfaces, and clean windows throughout the facility. o Animal Dishes: Wash, sanitize, dry, and put away dishes. Keep the wash area clean and organized for the next volunteer. o Laundry: Wash and dry towels, bedding, blankets, soft toys, and other machine-washable items. Sort dirty laundry, run loads through the washer and dryer, fold as needed, and return clean items to their designated areas. Ensure machines and the laundry room are clean, organized, and ready for the next use. o Transfer Cleaning: Assist with cleaning before and after animal transfer days. Tasks may include setting up crates, preparing to receive incoming animals, and supporting transfer-out preparations. • Connect with Shelter staff or the Volunteer Lead at the start of each shift to prioritize tasks. • Organize cleaning materials and notify staff when supplies are running low. • Follow all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols as needed. • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies. This includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary. • Tasks may involve long periods of standing, bending, and walking. • Able to work safely around cleaning chemicals, detergents, and disinfectants. • Comfortable working on wet or slippery floors and taking precautions to prevent slips or falls. • Able to lift, carry, or move items such as laundry, crates, or cleaning supplies as required. • Comfortable working around soiled laundry, animal dishes, and other materials that may contain fur, dander, or biological contaminants. Support Workers • If you are a support worker, or wish to volunteer with your support worker please see the following important information: o Support Workers must submit their own application and complete all required steps, including online training. o Support Workers are expected to provide the level of supervision and support needed by the volunteer while volunteering. Youth Volunteers • Youth under 12 years of age are not able to volunteer. • Youth between the ages of 12-15 o Can volunteer only when accompanied and supervised by a parent/guardian (19+ years old) • Youth between the ages of 16-18 o Can volunteer with the consent of their guardians. • Youth volunteering for school requirements: o depending upon the program requirements and amount of students submitting applications for this purpose, not all centres will be able to accommodate these requests. o For more information before submitting an application, contact volunteers@spca.bc.ca to inquire. Dog Care & Wellness. Our goal is to prepare every dog for a loving home. Volunteers provide enrichment, training, care, and support to build confidence and positive behaviours. By keeping environments clean and following staff plans, we help ensure each dog is healthy, happy, and ready for adoption. Responsibilities • Provide dogs enrichment through walking, mental stimulation, play and affection. • Encourage positive behaviours and basic leash skills through approved BC SPCA training techniques. • Follow any/all recommended behavioural plans set by the staff. • Record details of each interaction and report concerns/improvements to staff in a timely manner. • Follow all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols. • Clean kennels, dishes, laundry & toys. • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies. Requirements & Training • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions. • Completion of BC SPCA's online training prior to starting to volunteer. Additional in-person and online training may be required to volunteer with dogs on behavioural plans or needing PPE. • Able to follow and interpret verbal and/or written directions, signage, and procedures. • Knowledge of dog behaviour and comfortable working with dogs of all breeds and sizes (required). • Completion of the Fear Free program on low-stress animal handling for shelter animals is highly recommended. Approximately 6 hours to complete online. Facilities Maintenance




Facilities Maintenance, Join our team of as a Facilities Maintenance volunteer with the BC SPCA! In this hands-on role, you'll support the care and upkeep of our buildings, furniture, equipment and more. From minor repairs and safety checks to organizing storage spaces and assisting with seasonal tasks, you'll help ensure our facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for animals, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities Support general facility upkeep, including light repairs and touch-ups under staff direction. Keep track of maintenance schedule. Assist with assembling, repairing, or tightening kennel panels, gates, and enclosure hardware. Help maintain and repair furniture such as desks, chairs, shelving, and storage units. • Clean and maintain washers, dryers, and other basic appliances (lint traps, filters, exterior surfaces). Replace simple hardware such as screws, bolts, hooks, knobs, or chair wheels. Perform minor painting, patching, or wall-repair tasks as approved by staff. Replace batteries in smoke detectors, clocks, and other low-risk devices. Move or set up furniture, crates, or materials for programs, events, or operational needs. Communicate promptly with BC SPCA staff if any concerns or issues arise, such as equipment malfunctions or potential safety hazards. Follow Centre's processes for volunteers checking in/out and ensuring your volunteer hours are logged. Requirements & Training • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions. • Age requirement of 16+ years of age: Youth 16-18 years must have their guardian complete the consent form in the application to be able to volunteer independently. • Strong organizational skills, including keeping tools, supplies, and work areas tidy and well-maintained. • Previous experience/training with basic maintenance, repairs, or facility upkeep an asset. • Ability to follow safety procedures and take direction from staff. • Comfortable using hand tools and small power tools safely. • Ability to identify potential hazards and notify staff. • Strong problem-solving skills and confidence assessing simple repair needs • Must be comfortable working around animals and navigating spaces where animals are present. • Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to volunteer. Volunteering Conditions • Physical Activity: This role involves a high level of physical activity, including tasks such as shoveling snow, lifting bags of sand or ice melt, moving bags of dirt, lawn clippings, and other hands-on outdoor work. Volunteers may be required to lift and move items such as tools, furniture, kennel panels, or equipment (within safe and reasonable limits) • Safety Protocols: Volunteers are expected to follow all safety procedures, including the safe use of tools and equipment, proper lifting techniques, wearing appropriate protective gear, and reporting any hazards or concerns to staff. • Potential Hazards: Volunteers should remain aware of potential risks associated with using and handling equipment and tools. Food Bank Distribution Assistant. If you like helping your community and care about animals, but prefer to work behind the scenes, this role is a great fit. We need volunteers to help plan and prepare our pet food supplies for our community outreach food bank. Your help will make sure pet owners in your community have safe and reliable access to food for their animals. Join our Clean Team at the BC SPCA and with every task, whether folding laundry or sanitizing a room, help animals stay healthy, reduce risk of disease, and support their path to adoption. Responsibilities • Cleaning tasks will vary by location and may include: o General Cleaning: Sweep, mop, sanitize surfaces, and clean windows throughout the facility. o Animal Dishes: Wash, sanitize, dry, and put away dishes. Keep the wash area clean and organized for the next volunteer. o Laundry: Wash and dry towels, bedding, blankets, soft toys, and other machine-washable items. Sort dirty laundry, run loads through the washer and dryer, fold as needed, and return clean items to their designated areas. Ensure machines and the laundry room are clean, organized, and ready for the next use. o Transfer Cleaning: Assist with cleaning before and after animal transfer days. When animals need extra support, fostering provides an essential level of care that helps them prepare for their forever home or gives them a safe place to stay before being reunited with their families. Responsibilities Communicate urgently with the centre when an animal requires veterinary attention. • Spend quality time with foster animals daily by providing enrichment activities, play, grooming/petting, and exercise. • Provide a suitable environment that meets the animal's needs. • Ability to transport to/from the centre and/or veterinarian as needed. • Complete behaviour and health reports as needed. This includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary. • Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards such as bites, scratches, or exposure to zoonotic diseases. Training will cover how to minimize these risks. Time Commitment • Approximately 1-3 hours of online training is required for entry into the foster program. Dressing for the conditions and being prepared for seasonal changes will help keep you comfortable and safe. • Lifting and Moving: You may need to lift or move supplies, equipment, or animals. Training will cover what to do and who to contact if something comes up. Time Commitment • Will vary based on location and need. May include casual or on-call, as needed. • Weekday availability, preferably between 8:00am-10:OOam and 3:00pm-6:OOpm to accommodate dropping off animals at veterinarian clinics and picking up after procedures. Food Bank Distribution Assistant. If you like helping your community and care about animals, but prefer to work behind the scenes, this role is a great fit. We need volunteers to help plan and prepare our pet food supplies for our community outreach food bank. Your help will make sure pet owners in your community have safe and reliable access to food for their animals. Facilities Maintenance, Join our team of as a Facilities Maintenance volunteer with the BC SPCA! In this hands-on role, you'll support the care and upkeep of our buildings, furniture, equipment and more. From minor repairs and safety checks to organizing storage spaces and assisting with seasonal tasks, you'll help ensure our facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for animals, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities Support general facility upkeep, including light repairs and touch-ups under staff direction. Keep track of maintenance schedule. Assist with assembling, repairing, or tightening kennel panels, gates, and enclosure hardware. Help maintain and repair furniture such as desks, chairs, shelving, and storage units. • Clean and maintain washers, dryers, and other basic appliances (lint traps, filters, exterior surfaces). Replace simple hardware such as screws, bolts, hooks, knobs, or chair wheels. Perform minor painting, patching, or wall-repair tasks as approved by staff. Replace batteries in smoke detectors, clocks, and other low-risk devices. Move or set up furniture, crates, or materials for programs, events, or operational needs. By keeping environments clean and following staff plans, we help ensure each dog is healthy, happy, and ready for adoption. Responsibilities • Provide dogs enrichment through walking, mental stimulation, play and affection. • Encourage positive behaviours and basic leash skills through approved BC SPCA training techniques. • Follow any/all recommended behavioural plans set by the staff. • Record details of each interaction and report concerns/improvements to staff in a timely manner. • Follow all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols. • Clean kennels, dishes, laundry & toys. • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies. Clean Team. Join our Clean Team at the BC SPCA and with every task, whether folding laundry or sanitizing a room, help animals stay healthy, reduce risk of disease, and support their path to adoption. Responsibilities • Cleaning tasks will vary by location and may include: o General Cleaning: Sweep, mop, sanitize surfaces, and clean windows throughout the facility. o Animal Dishes: Wash, sanitize, dry, and put away dishes. Keep the wash area clean and organized for the next volunteer. o Laundry: Wash and dry towels, bedding, blankets, soft toys, and other machine-washable items. Sort dirty laundry, run loads through the washer and dryer, fold as needed, and return clean items to their designated areas. Ensure machines and the laundry room are clean, organized, and ready for the next use. o Transfer Cleaning: Assist with cleaning before and after animal transfer days. Tasks may include setting up crates, preparing to receive incoming animals, and supporting transfer-out preparations. • Connect with Shelter staff or the Volunteer Lead at the start of each shift to prioritize tasks. • Organize cleaning materials and notify staff when supplies are running low. • Follow all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols as needed. • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies. Clean Team




Clean Team. Join our Clean Team at the BC SPCA and with every task, whether folding laundry or sanitizing a room, help animals stay healthy, reduce risk of disease, and support their path to adoption. Responsibilities • Cleaning tasks will vary by location and may include: o General Cleaning: Sweep, mop, sanitize surfaces, and clean windows throughout the facility. o Animal Dishes: Wash, sanitize, dry, and put away dishes. Keep the wash area clean and organized for the next volunteer. o Laundry: Wash and dry towels, bedding, blankets, soft toys, and other machine-washable items. Sort dirty laundry, run loads through the washer and dryer, fold as needed, and return clean items to their designated areas. Ensure machines and the laundry room are clean, organized, and ready for the next use. o Transfer Cleaning: Assist with cleaning before and after animal transfer days. Tasks may include setting up crates, preparing to receive incoming animals, and supporting transfer-out preparations. • Connect with Shelter staff or the Volunteer Lead at the start of each shift to prioritize tasks. • Organize cleaning materials and notify staff when supplies are running low. • Follow all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols as needed. • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies. Facilities Maintenance, Join our team of as a Facilities Maintenance volunteer with the BC SPCA! In this hands-on role, you'll support the care and upkeep of our buildings, furniture, equipment and more. From minor repairs and safety checks to organizing storage spaces and assisting with seasonal tasks, you'll help ensure our facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for animals, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities Support general facility upkeep, including light repairs and touch-ups under staff direction. Keep track of maintenance schedule. Assist with assembling, repairing, or tightening kennel panels, gates, and enclosure hardware. Help maintain and repair furniture such as desks, chairs, shelving, and storage units. • Clean and maintain washers, dryers, and other basic appliances (lint traps, filters, exterior surfaces). Replace simple hardware such as screws, bolts, hooks, knobs, or chair wheels. Perform minor painting, patching, or wall-repair tasks as approved by staff. Replace batteries in smoke detectors, clocks, and other low-risk devices. Move or set up furniture, crates, or materials for programs, events, or operational needs. Communicate promptly with BC SPCA staff if any concerns or issues arise, such as equipment malfunctions or potential safety hazards. Dressing for the conditions and being prepared for seasonal changes will help keep you comfortable and safe. • Lifting and Moving: You may need to lift or move supplies, equipment, or animals. Clean Team. Join our Clean Team at the BC SPCA and with every task, whether folding laundry or sanitizing a room, help animals stay healthy, reduce risk of disease, and support their path to adoption. Responsibilities • Cleaning tasks will vary by location and may include: o General Cleaning: Sweep, mop, sanitize surfaces, and clean windows throughout the facility. o Animal Dishes: Wash, sanitize, dry, and put away dishes. Keep the wash area clean and organized for the next volunteer. o Laundry: Wash and dry towels, bedding, blankets, soft toys, and other machine-washable items. Sort dirty laundry, run loads through the washer and dryer, fold as needed, and return clean items to their designated areas. Ensure machines and the laundry room are clean, organized, and ready for the next use. o Transfer Cleaning: Assist with cleaning before and after animal transfer days. Tasks may include setting up crates, preparing to receive incoming animals, and supporting transfer-out preparations. • Connect with Shelter staff or the Volunteer Lead at the start of each shift to prioritize tasks. • Organize cleaning materials and notify staff when supplies are running low. • Follow all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols as needed. • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies. By keeping environments clean and following staff plans, we help ensure each dog is healthy, happy, and ready for adoption. Facilities Maintenance, Join our team of as a Facilities Maintenance volunteer with the BC SPCA! In this hands-on role, you'll support the care and upkeep of our buildings, furniture, equipment and more. From minor repairs and safety checks to organizing storage spaces and assisting with seasonal tasks, you'll help ensure our facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for animals, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities Support general facility upkeep, including light repairs and touch-ups under staff direction. Keep track of maintenance schedule. Assist with assembling, repairing, or tightening kennel panels, gates, and enclosure hardware. Help maintain and repair furniture such as desks, chairs, shelving, and storage units. • Clean and maintain washers, dryers, and other basic appliances (lint traps, filters, exterior surfaces). Replace simple hardware such as screws, bolts, hooks, knobs, or chair wheels. Perform minor painting, patching, or wall-repair tasks as approved by staff. Replace batteries in smoke detectors, clocks, and other low-risk devices. Move or set up furniture, crates, or materials for programs, events, or operational needs.
