Commitment:

Animal Transport Volunteer

 

 

Requirements for the Animal Transport Volunteer Role

  • Age: 19 years or older

 

Documents Required:

  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
  • Clean driving record

 

Availability: Weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Please note that most transport requests occur in the morning.

 

Commitment:

  • Minimum 6‑month commitment starting from your onboarding date

We are currently accepting applications from individuals who meet all of the following criteria:

 

Availability & Commitment:

  • Able to volunteer once per week for the next 6 months

  • Regular, ongoing weekly availability

  • Shifts available Monday–Sunday, between 9:30am–4:30pm

  • No evening shifts

  • Each shift is approximately 2 hours

  • Experience with cats is required

Dog Care & Wellness.  Our goal is to prepare every dog for a loving home. Volunteers provide enrichment, training,  care, and support to build confidence and positive behaviours. By keeping environments clean  and following staff plans, we help ensure each dog is healthy, happy, and ready for adoption.  Responsibilities  • Provide dogs enrichment through walking, mental stimulation, play and affection.  • Encourage positive behaviours and basic leash skills through approved BC SPCA training techniques.  • Follow any/all recommended behavioural plans set by the staff.  • Record details of each interaction and report concerns/improvements to staff in a timely manner.  • Follow all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols.  • Clean kennels, dishes, laundry & toys as needed.  • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies.  Requirements & Training  • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.  • Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to volunteer.  Additional in person and online training may be required to volunteer with dogs on behavioural plans or  needing PPE.  • Knowledge of dog behaviour and comfortable working with dogs of all breeds and sizes (required).  • Completion of the Fear Free program on low-stress animal handling for shelter animals is highly  recommended. Approximately 6 hours to complete online.  Youth Volunteers  • Youth volunteers under 19 years of age are not permitted to work directly with dogs at this location.  However, there are many other meaningful ways for youth to get involved and make a difference!  Volunteering Conditions  • Indoor and Outdoor Settings: Volunteers may work both indoors and outdoors, depending on the tasks.  Indoor settings include animal care areas, offices, and medical facilities, while outdoor work might involve  walking dogs in the surrounding area or maintaining the premises.  • Weather Conditions: Outdoor tasks may require working in various weather conditions, including rain,  snow, ice, or heat. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared for seasonal  changes.  • Lifting and Moving: Volunteers may need to lift or move supplies, equipment, or animals, which can  require physical strength and stamina.  • Standing and Walking: Many roles involve long periods of standing or walking, particularly when  interacting with animals or the public. *Contact us about accommodations and modifications.  • Animal Handling: Working directly with animals may involve low-stress handling, or caring for them,  which requires patience and attention to detail.  • Safety Protocols: Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. This  includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary.  • Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards such as bites, scratches, or exposure to zoonotic  diseases. Clean Team.  Join our Clean Team at the BC SPCA and with every task, whether folding laundry or  sanitizing a room, help animals stay healthy, reduce risk of disease, and support their path to  adoption.  Responsibilities  • Cleaning tasks will vary by location and may include:  o General Cleaning: Sweep, mop, sanitize surfaces, and clean windows throughout the facility.  o Animal Dishes: Wash, sanitize, dry, and put away dishes. Keep the wash area clean and organized for  the next volunteer.  o Laundry: Wash and dry towels, bedding, blankets, soft toys, and other machine-washable items. Sort  dirty laundry, run loads through the washer and dryer, fold as needed, and return clean items to their  designated areas. Ensure machines and the laundry room are clean, organized, and ready for the next  use.  o Transfer Cleaning: Assist with cleaning before and after animal transfer days. Tasks may include  setting up crates, preparing to receive incoming animals, and supporting transfer-out preparations.  • Connect with Shelter staff or the Volunteer Lead at the start of each shift to prioritize tasks.  • Organize cleaning materials and notify staff when supplies are running low.  • Follow all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and biosecurity protocols as needed.  • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies.  Requirements & Training  • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.  • Open to completing a variety of tasks as needed or required.  • Organized, dependable, and can work well with others or independently.  • Able to follow and interpret verbal and written directions, signage, and procedures.  • Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to volunteer.  Volunteering Conditions  • Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. This includes using  personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary.  • Tasks may involve long periods of standing, bending, and walking.  • Able to work safely around cleaning chemicals, detergents, and disinfectants.  • Comfortable working on wet or slippery floors and taking precautions to prevent slips or falls.  • Able to lift, carry, or move items such as laundry, crates, or cleaning supplies as required.  • Comfortable working around soiled laundry, animal dishes, and other materials that may contain fur,  dander, or biological contaminants.  Support Workers  • If you are a support worker, or wish to volunteer with your support worker please see the following  important information:  o Support Workers must submit their own application and complete all required steps, including online  training.  o Support Workers are expected to provide the level of supervision and support needed by the  volunteer while volunteering.  Youth Volunteers  • Youth under 12 years of age are not able to volunteer.  • Youth between the ages of 12-15  o Can volunteer only when accompanied and supervised by a parent/guardian (19+ years old)  • Youth between the ages of 16-18  o Can volunteer with the consent of their guardians.  • Youth volunteering for school requirements:  o depending upon the program requirements and amount of students submitting applications for this  purpose, not all centres will be able to accommodate these requests.  o For more information before submitting an application, contact volunteers@spca.bc.ca to inquire.  Include the location and details of your school program.  Youth volunteering directly with animals is at the discretion of the Centre staff and may vary depending  on the current animals at the Centre and other applicable factors. Animal Fostering.  Foster Care volunteers give vulnerable animals a safe place to heal, grow, learn, and feel  secure. When animals need extra support, fostering provides an essential level of care that  helps them prepare for their forever home or gives them a safe place to stay before being  reunited with their families.  Responsibilities  Communicate urgently with the centre when an animal requires veterinary attention.  • Spend quality time with foster animals daily by providing enrichment activities, play, grooming/petting,  and exercise.  • Provide a suitable environment that meets the animal's needs.  • Ability to transport to/from the centre and/or veterinarian as needed.  • Complete behaviour and health reports as needed.  Requirements & Training  • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.  • Fosters, or lead fosters in a family, must be 19+ years of age and have housing where pets are permitted.  • Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to foster.  • Previous experience caring for injured/ill animals preferred.  • Open to learning new animal care and training methods.  Volunteering Conditions  • Animal Handling: Working directly with animals may involve low-stress handling, or caring for them,  which requires patience and attention to detail.  • Safety Protocols: Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. BC SPCA Community Ambassador.  Ambassadors connect directly with the community at events such as farmers markets,  adoption fairs, food drives, and other local gatherings. The goal of this role is to raise  awareness about the organization's mission and the importance of animal care. Animal Fostering.  Foster Care volunteers give vulnerable animals a safe place to heal, grow, learn, and feel  secure. When animals need extra support, fostering provides an essential level of care that  helps them prepare for their forever home or gives them a safe place to stay before being  reunited with their families.  Responsibilities  Communicate urgently with the centre when an animal requires veterinary attention.  • Spend quality time with foster animals daily by providing enrichment activities, play, grooming/petting,  and exercise.  • Provide a suitable environment that meets the animal's needs.  • Ability to transport to/from the centre and/or veterinarian as needed.  • Complete behaviour and health reports as needed.  Requirements & Training  • Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.  • Fosters, or lead fosters in a family, must be 19+ years of age and have housing where pets are permitted.  • Completion of BC SPCA provided online training must be completed prior to starting to foster.  • Previous experience caring for injured/ill animals preferred.  • Open to learning new animal care and training methods.  Volunteering Conditions  • Animal Handling: Working directly with animals may involve low-stress handling, or caring for them,  which requires patience and attention to detail.  • Safety Protocols: Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. This  includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary.  • Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards such as bites, scratches, or exposure to zoonotic  diseases. Training will cover how to minimize these risks.  Time Commitment  • Approximately 1-3 hours of online training is required for entry into the foster program. Transport Volunteer.  Join a compassionate community and make a real difference as an Animal Transport Volunteer  with the BC SPCA. You'll play a vital role in safely moving animals and essential supplies  where they're needed most. If you love animals and enjoy being on the road, this is the perfect  way to combine both passions.  Responsibilities  Transport animals to and from local veterinary clinics for medical appointments  • Transport animals between BC SPCA locations  • Pick up supplies for animals in care  • Ensure animals are transported in a safe and secure manner  • Oversee vehicle maintenance as needed  • Communicate with centre staff if there are any concerns  • Adhere to all BC SPCA Animal Transfer Protocols and Policies  Requirements & Training  Age 19+ years of age.  • The volunteer application will request:  o A photo of the front of your valid class 5 BC driver's license.  o A recently obtained driving record from ICBC: https://onlinebusiness.icbc.com/clio .  • Note: the correct document required is a driving record not driving factor report.  • Completion of BC SPCA's Vehicle Use Policies and Agreements  Comfortable driving cargo vans.  • Ability to lift animals and/or supplies up to 50 lbs.  Calm and understanding disposition.  Works well on a team and independently.  Philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values and strategic directions.  Completion of BC SPCA online training must be completed prior to starting to volunteer.  Volunteering Conditions  • Indoor and Outdoor Settings: Animal Transport Volunteers may work in a mix of indoor and outdoor  environments, including shelters, veterinary clinics, vehicles, and outdoor areas during animal pick-ups  and drop-offs.  • Weather Conditions: Driving and transport can happen in all kinds of weather such as rain, snow, ice, and  heat. Dressing for the conditions and being prepared for seasonal changes will help keep you comfortable  and safe.  • Lifting and Moving: You may need to lift or move supplies, equipment, or animals. If you need any  accommodations, we're happy to chat about how we can support you.  • Animal Handling: When interacting with animals, you'll use low-stress handling techniques to help keep  them calm and comfortable during transport.  • Safety Protocols: To keep both you and the animals safe, volunteers follow established safety  procedures, including using PPE when needed and reporting any concerns to staff.  • Potential Hazards: Working with animals and driving can come with certain risks. These may include bites  or scratches, sudden animal movement, exposure to zoonotic diseases, or vehicle-related issues such as  flat tires, mechanical problems, or accidents. Training will help you understand these risks and how to  minimize them.  • Safe Vehicle Use: Volunteers are expected to operate vehicles safely and responsibly at all times. This  includes following the rules of the road, securing animals and supplies properly, and checking that the  vehicle is in safe working condition before driving.  • Emergency Situations: While uncommon, unexpected situations can happen on the road. Volunteers  should be prepared to respond calmly to things like vehicle issues, animal distress, or sudden changes in  driving conditions.     • You can care for animals with medical needs, including those recovering from surgery, or
    • You can support kittens that require bottle feeding every few hours.
    • You can support cats or kittens that require quarantine and use of PPE.
