Kathleen, pictured above, had this to say about volunteering, "I love volunteering at Aurora since I get hands on experience with patients, nurses, and doctors. I love the intrinsic reward of helping others, whether it is giving ice packs to patients after surgery or showing a patient where the bathroom is located, I love giving back to my community. I also love the flexibility that volunteering offers. During the school year and during the summer, your schedule can be made to match what works best for you. You are also able to try lots of different departments, which has given me the opportunity to narrow down potential career paths.  I get excited to volunteer because each day brings something new. Nothing is ever the same in healthcare, which has always been my draw to a career in the medical field. I love being able to work alongside professionals and get the opportunity to learn from experience."

Our Awesome Opportunities!

Advocate and Aurora Health Virtual Volunteer

Virtual volunteers can work remote from home while still providing meaningful support for our patients through a variety of programs. The Concierge Admission Program supports newly admitted patients with a phone call from a virtual volunteer to discuss their stay, identify any needs they may have while with us and assist with concerns. Volunteers call patients from home to any one of our hospitals. Virtual volunteers can also serve as remote witnesses for patients who need an advance directive for care and assist with hospitalized patients during elections to provide guidance on how they can vote using a proxy. Many more virtual experiences are being developed thanks to our wonderful virtual volunteers!

Ambassador/Entrance Volunteer

Ambassadors welcome and escort patients and visitors throughout the hospital making them feel welcome and safe. You are helping to set the stage for a successful visit with us, and you may be the last impression as they leave. This is a powerful role to help ensure our patients and visitors do not worry about where or how they get to their destination within our facilities. You help reduce that anxiety so they can focus on their healing journey.  Pictured above is Steve, an Ambassador at the hospital entrance at Aurora Medical Center, Summit.

Peter, an Ambassador who has been volunteering for over three years said, "I feel that I'm making a contribution, giving back, filling a need." He explained that he gets excited about volunteering because of..."the people I serve and the people I serve with."

Musical Talent Opportunities

Our volunteer musicians visit patients and gathering spaces within our hospitals to play music that provides a soothing escape from pain and isolation. Musicians typically play instruments such as piano (many hospitals have one in their main entrance area), flute, harp, or any stringed instrument. Their talent is a gift to all -- our patients, teammates and visitors!

Patient Facing/Patient Care Areas

We have a variety of volunteer roles focused on supporting the inpatients and our nursing teams. Our goal is to ensure every inpatient has the support they need during their stay and an excellent patient experience. Volunteers visit assigned patients regularly and use active listening skills to check in on their needs and provide emotional support.  They also assist with stocking supplies and linens as Aadhi is demonstrating. We also have volunteers who visit with fresh baked cookies to lift their spirits.

As a newer volunteer, Aadhi explains, "I continue to volunteer because I think it is a great opportunity to experience the health care system hands on. Getting to contribute in a real hospital setting is what gets me excited each week."

Spiritual Care

Our wonderful spiritual care volunteers partner with our spiritual care team to provide that much needed support for patients. Eucharistic ministers help deliver communion to patients and other volunteers help meet with patients to identify what type of spiritual care is needed so our chaplain team can get those resources for the patient.

Bob and Mary, pictured above, said, "We've been volunteers at Aurora for two years.  We look forward to volunteering every week because the staff is so friendly and helpful and the patients are a joy to serve and to visit. It's rewarding to us, and the patients appreciate our service."

Pet/Animal Assisted Therapy

Our four-legged friends and their volunteer handlers bring joy and reduce anxiety for patients, visitors and teammates through our animal assisted therapy program. Dogs and at some sites, miniature horses, must be certified for animal assisted (pet) therapy and visit throughout our hospitals. They are beloved by all!

Pictured above are Riley and his parents, Bob and Jackie.  They visit patients regularly.  Jackie had this to say about volunteering with us, "I believe even small acts of kindness make a difference in someone's day.  The staff of Aurora Summit are wonderful. They always make me feel comfortable, and they very much appreciate me.  I look forward to volunteering each week because I know I've made people happy, and that makes me happy!"

Crafting

Prayer shawls, lap blankets, quilts, cards, tray favors...the list goes on with the many ways our talented volunteers share their gifts with our patients! We welcome any and all ideas of handmade items to lift the spirits of our patients. If you have an idea of something you'd like to share, please let us know and we'll work with you to ensure it is safe for the hospital environment.
