Kelly, a volunteer at AMCWC, shared this about volunteering, "Becoming a volunteer for Advocate Aurora was an incredible experience. Erin Groshek, the Manager for Volunteer Services for Summit and Washington County made it an easy prosses. Her thoughtfulness and professional responses helped me feel welcomed to the volunteering team. There are many different options to help with volunteering in the hospital setting, and with Erin's help, she will get you into an open area that can use your help. You’re just not helping the staff members; you are also helping the patients and their families. Volunteering helps you learn new skills, meet new people, and increase your social networking. If you have an interest in exploring medical careers, this will get you the inside perspective causing an immediate feeling to form a connection to those around, that have the same interest and goals."

General Interests

Ambassador/Entrance Volunteer

Ambassadors welcome and escort patients and visitors throughout the hospital and clinic making them feel welcome and safe. You are helping to set the stage for a successful visit with us, and you may be the last impression as they leave. This is a powerful role to help ensure our patients and visitors do not worry about where or how they get to their destination within our facilities. You help reduce that anxiety so they can focus on their healing journey.

Pictured above is Mark, who is a newer volunteer to us.  Mark enjoys his time as an Ambassador at the Aurora Hartford Clinic and had this to say, "This [volunteering] is something that I wanted to do since being retired.  I like to help people.  I greet each and every patient who enters the clinic with a big, bright smile and say, "Good morning!"  I want our patients to feel comfortable and cared for - not only when they arrive, but when they leave, too.  The best part of doing this volunteer service is the return smiles you receive and knowing that the kindness and thoughtfulness that you showed them may make their day a little brighter!  I want our patients to feel that they are a person of value.  Kindness goes a long way.  Everyone wants to be respected and treated right. I myself have such compassion for our patients who may be in some sort of discomfort or having a tough time walking.  I want to comfort them."

Crafting

Prayer shawls, lap blankets, quilts, baby hats, stuffed toys...the list goes on and on with the many ways our talented volunteers share their gifts with our patients! We welcome any and all ideas of handmade items to lift the spirits of our patients. If you have an idea of something you'd like to share please let us know and we'll work with you to ensure it is safe for the hospital environment.

Pet/Animal Assisted Therapy

Our four-legged friends and their volunteer handlers bring joy and reduce anxiety for patients, visitors and teammates through our animal assisted therapy program. Dogs and at some sites, miniature horses, must be certified for animal assisted (pet) therapy and visit throughout our hospitals. They are beloved by all!

Pictured are Buddha and Keith. They are one of several teams who enjoy making our patients and teammates happy!  Keith had this to say about volunteering after eight years, "Buddha, my Therapy Dog, and I enjoy our time at Aurora.  We get to visit with great patients and are so appreciated by the entire Aurora staff.  They are wonderful.  Buddha gets very excited because everyone pets him and tells him how handsome he is.  I get personal satisfaction from providing some comfort to people through our visits.  I would not continue to volunteer unless it was a great experience."

Spiritual Care

Our wonderful spiritual care volunteers partner with our spiritual care team to provide that much needed support for patients. Eucharistic ministers help deliver communion to patients and other volunteers help meet with patients to identify what type of spiritual care is needed so our chaplain team can get those resources for the patient.

Advocate and Aurora Health Virtual Volunteer

Virtual volunteers can work remote from home while still providing meaningful support for our patients through a variety of programs. The Concierge Admission Program supports newly admitted patients with a phone call from a virtual volunteer to discuss their stay, identify any needs they may have while with us and assist with concerns. Volunteers call patients from home to any one of our hospitals. Virtual volunteers can also serve as remote witnesses for patients who need an advance directive for care and assist with hospitalized patients during elections to provide guidance on how they can vote using a proxy. Many more virtual experiences are being developed thanks to our wonderful virtual volunteers!
