Adult Literacy Tutor Volunteer

Description of activities and tasks: Support adult learners (18 years and older) in developing essential reading, writing, and/or math skills through one-on-one or small-group tutoring. Volunteers work closely with learners to help them achieve personalized goals they set for themselves.
Purpose of Position: Provide one-to-one or small group tutoring for adults, 18 years of age and older in basic reading, writing and/or math skills.
Qualifications:
- Eighteen years of age and older.
- High school diploma or GED, high school equivalency diploma
- Caring and culturally sensitive attitude. Flexible and patient.
- Completion of 6-hour tutor training.
- Dependable and able to keep a two-day per week commitment for a minimum of six months, but preferably one year.
Responsible To: Literacy Tutor/Learner Coordinators
Responsibilities:
- Complete 6-hour volunteer tutor training workshop series.
- Attend curriculum planning sessions and in-service tutor training workshops.
- Maintain a portfolio of student work, lesson plans, progress tests and attendance records.
- Demonstrate competency in teaching basic literacy skills.
- Evaluate learner progress.
- Complete tutor monthly reports and other record-keeping forms as necessary.
- Ensure accountability (attendance, performance, reporting).
Training Provided: All volunteers receive comprehensive training, curriculum materials, and ongoing support from our literacy coordinators; six hours of pre-service tutor training to teach basic literacy skills to English language adult learners and ongoing in-service training.

Time Commitment: Minimum of two 1.5-hour tutoring sessions per week; one hour planning per week; or minimum of four hours per week plus travel time.
Length of Commitment: Minimum of six months to one year or more.
