FSN - Financial Instructor Job Description

The Financial Stability Network of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington is partnering with various organizations to provide financial education to low and medium-income individuals and families. The goal is to make our participants more financially aware and knowledgeable so they can ask good questions of financial professionals and understand what they are being told.

We are seeking individuals with expertise in personal financial topics to teach a variety of courses (Banking, Budgeting, Saving for Retirement, Credit Scores, Insurance, Taxes – currently 20 different classes).  Professional expertise will be invaluable in helping participants understand the course material.   

The Financial Stability Network (FSN) relies on professionals like you to provide pro-bono financial services to those who otherwise would not have access to financial guidance, education, and tax consulting. Together, we work to assist low-income families and individuals with increasing income and building sustainable assets.  In the Financial Education Program, we also teach medium income individuals and families.  There is a large gap in our financial education in this country, we are working to fill the gap and getting people knowledgeable to make good financial decisions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Meet with the organization’s management or FSN Site Ambassador for the training at the site so you get an understanding of the level of knowledge of the participants.
• Preparing for training.  Review the instructor manual for the basic courses and watch prior videos of the training for the advanced courses.  Adjusting the training material to meet the length of class and knowledge level or the participants.  It may also require you to do some research on the topic so you are comfortable with the material and can answer questions.

• Knowledge on the classes you will be teaching
• Effective communication skills, especially listening skills
• Empathetic and patient
• Organized and reliable
• Encouraging and supportive
• Able to articulate basic financial skills, e.g.: knowledge of how to open bank accounts, create budgets, etc.

Desired Skills, Experience & Characteristics:

• Experience in presenting/teaching
• Experience with people living on low-income (a plus but not required)
• Spanish language proficiency (a plus but not required)

Support:

• Volunteers will participate in Catholic Charities Volunteer Orientation.
• Volunteers will participate in a training session on Financial Education and how to use FSN's. resources
• Volunteers will be supported by the leadership team from FSN.

Time Commitment:

• Volunteers will meet with organization’s management or FSN Site Ambassador to obtain the level of the participants financial knowledge.
• Prepare for and provide training

Location:

• Instructing classes will be held at the time and place that you sign up to teach.  Some will be a location in the DC area and others will be done remotely via platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meetings.
