Community Champions

Role Objective

Assist and support the Redlands Coast community during times of disaster/emergency in conjunction with Council’s Local Disaster Management Group, Red Cross and Volunteering Queensland.  Continuously strengthen relationship links with Council, agencies and other organisations to ensure effective communication to communities during times of disaster/emergency.

Key Duties

  • Assist in the set up and operating of an evacuation centre during disaster, as per the  Australian Red Cross Volunteer role description
  • Provide education to the community about how to prepare for a disaster/emergency.
  • Help build community resilience and disaster preparedness.
  • Contribute invaluable local knowledge and expertise to assist in all aspects of disaster management for example providing the location of vulnerable residents during a disaster.
  • Assist with community recovery following a disaster, as per the Australian Red Cross Volunteer role description 
  • Ability to respond to emails and phone calls from the island coordinator, Red Cross and Redland City Council in a timely manner.
  • Attend bi-monthly meetings held predominantly on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and occasionally on the mainland.

Necessary Skills and Experience

  • Be a resident of the Redland City Council area and have a passion for the community.
  • Ability to take direction from Community Champion Primary Contacts and Council’s Disaster Management Unit  staff.
  • Ability to build relationships and work as part of a team.
  • An insight and understanding of local community, neighbourhoods and individuals.
  • Ability to learn new skills and share existing ones.
  • Good communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and to use own initiative.
  • Must be 18 year of age or older.
  • Volunteers must also be registered with Australian Red Cross.
  • Working with Children Blue Card (Council to arrange if not already in possession)

Expected Time Commitment

  • There is an expectation that you will attend multiple Community Champion meetings throughout the calendar year and be available for training as and when it arises.
  • Assist with Community Engagement activities as required.
