English Conversation Circles

The aim of the English Conversation Circles is to create a casual, stress-free atmosphere where residents who have English as a second language can enhance their speaking skills. It is essential for volunteers to keep in mind that the participants will be from diverse racial, social, religious, and political backgrounds, and their unique experiences should be treated with respect.

Role Objective

To provide opportunities for residents with English as an additional language to practice spoken English in an informal, non-threatening and inclusive group environment. Participants can feel comfortable and confident to converse in English for everyday situations, to improve their range of vocabulary and language structures around topics of interest.

Key Duties

  • Sign in at the library branch each session.
  • Guide conversation based on a selected topic and encourage everyone to talk in small groups or pairs; ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate.
  • Respect the lived experiences of participants who will come from a variety of racial, social, religious, and political backgrounds.
  • Keep all personal information strictly confidential.
  • Inform the Adult Programs Librarian if you cannot attend a scheduled session.
  • Report any accident or injury to the branch staff as soon as possible.
  • Ask the Adult Programs Librarian if you need assistance with resources or have concerns.
  • Check email and My Impact portal regularly.

Necessary Skills and Experience

  • English as first language.
  • Over 18 years of age.
  • Confident helping non-english speaking persons to learn more about conversing in English and an understanding that body language, including gestures and facial expressions are used in Australian society.
  • A personable demeanour and ability to interact comfortably, cheerfully and respectfully with participants of all ages and cultures.
  • A commitment to attending rostered shifts.
  • Homework, textbooks, tests, presentations and formal language exercises are not required or suitable for conversation circles.

Expected Time Commitment

9:45am – 11:00am Monday and/or Wednesday
