Hands on Learning Program

Hands on Learning is a charity that works to prevent early school leaving by creating opportunities at school for vulnerable young people to be more educationally engaged, discover their talents and experience success.

Hands On Learning is made up of four fundamental elements that build a platform for young people to grow confidence, engage, and achieve at school.

A place to belong:  A physical sanctuary at school

People to belong to: Small teams working together, sharing meals and building strong relationships.

Real things to do: Engaging in creative and meaningful projects.

A chance to give back: Making valuable contributions to their community, building self-esteem and connection.

Students are provided with strong mentoring relationships to support students’ gain self- awareness, feel safe and secure and offered routine and predictability to stabilize and anchor them to school and home.

Volunteers can play a valuable role in mentoring and supporting young people gain valuable skills and build positive relationships. Being a mentor is a sophisticated relationship with a young person that is more complex than being a friend. It is important to understand that all adults working in an educational setting are role models to young people are must model appropriate positive interaction with young people at all times.  As part of DET requirements all volunteers must have a working with children check.

This role requires a full day commitment on a Thursday in the Craigieburn area during school hours. Hands on skills are necessary such as building, cabinet making, landscaping, plumbing, cementing etc.
