Emergency Response Team - Veterinarian

Veterinarian Emergency Response Volunteer – RSPCA NSW

When emergencies happen, animals and the people who love them need support. Join our Emergency Response Volunteer Team and play an important role in supporting pet owners and their animals during bushfires, floods and other emergencies across NSW.

Our volunteers also help communities prepare before emergencies happen, attending community events and emergency expos to talk with animal owners about emergency preparedness and how they can plan for their animals.

Veterinarians play a key role in our Emergency Response Team, and we are looking for qualified vets to join us in supporting animals and their owners during emergencies.

This is a skilled and meaningful volunteer role for vets who want to use their expertise to support communities when they need it most.

What you'll be doing

  • Conducting health assessments and triaging animals impacted by emergencies

  • Administering essential medical treatment and medications, and referring to local vets for follow-up treatment where required

  • Documenting all veterinary procedures, treatments and assessments

  • Collaborating with RSPCA NSW staff and other volunteers to create a safe and caring environment for animals

  • Offering guidance and support to pet owners regarding their animals' health and welfare

  • Providing friendly and empathetic support to pet owners during what may be an incredibly difficult time

What we're looking for

  • Registered veterinary surgeon with a minimum of two years experience (essential)

  • Experience working in a team environment

  • Ability to empathise and communicate with individuals experiencing hardship and trauma

  • Demonstrated affinity with animals and a genuine commitment to animal welfare

  • Comfortable lifting heavy equipment and spending extended periods on your feet

Time commitment

This is a flexible, as-needed volunteer role. Emergency response opportunities will depend on the scale and urgency of emergency situations, while community preparedness events will take place at various times throughout the year.

Volunteers will be informed of upcoming deployment and community event opportunities and can choose to participate based on their availability.
