Emergency Response Team - In-field Volunteer

Emergency Response In-Field Volunteer – RSPCA NSW

When emergencies happen, animals and the people who love them need support. Join our Emergency Response Volunteer Team and play an important role in supporting pet owners and their animals during bushfires, floods and other emergencies across NSW.

Our volunteers also help communities prepare before emergencies happen, attending community events and emergency expos to talk with animal owners about emergency preparedness and how they can plan for their animals.

This is a meaningful, hands-on role that calls for compassion, calm under pressure, and a genuine desire to help people and animals.

What you'll be doing

  • Setting up and supporting evacuation centres and RSPCA Relief Points, ensuring they are organised and welcoming for pet owners and their animals.

  • Distributing essential pet supplies including food, water, bedding and crates to pet owners in the community.

  • Providing friendly and empathetic support to pet owners, answering questions and offering guidance on caring for their animals during emergency situations.

  • Supporting RSPCA NSW’s emergency preparedness work by attending community events and emergency expos.

  • Talking with animal owners about how they can better prepare for emergencies and plan for their pets and animals.

Opportunities to travel across NSW to support emergency response and preparedness activities or get involved closer to home by supporting your local community.

What we're looking for

  • At least 18 years of age

  • Enthusiastic and passionate about animal welfare and helping people

  • Comfortable lifting heavy equipment and spending extended periods on your feet

  • Calm, empathetic and able to work effectively under pressure

Time commitment

This is a flexible, as-needed volunteer role. Emergency response opportunities will depend on the scale and urgency of emergency situations, while community preparedness events will take place at various times throughout the year.

Volunteers will be informed of upcoming deployment and community event opportunities and can choose to participate based on their availability.
