Illawarra (Unanderra) Shelter – Kennel Assistant
Are you a confident, active and hands-on animal lover looking to make a real difference? Join our Kennel Assistant Volunteer Team at RSPCA NSW Illawarra and get stuck into one of our most rewarding shelter roles.
This is an active, varied role that will keep you on your feet throughout your entire shift — if you enjoy physical, hands-on work and love being around dogs of all shapes and sizes, you'll thrive here. From walking dogs to cleaning kennels to helping out in the laundry, no two shifts are the same.
What you'll be doing
- Walking dogs and spending quality kennel time with dogs in our care
- Cleaning kennels and maintaining a clean, safe and comfortable environment
- Assisting with feeds and providing enrichment for dogs in our care
- Using safe animal handling techniques and reading animal behaviour to provide welfare-considered care for each individual animal
- Reporting any signs of illness, injury or behavioural concerns to animal attendants
- Assisting in the laundry as needed
What we're looking for
- At least 16 years of age
- Comfortable with active, physical work throughout an entire shift
- Confident harnessing and walking dogs of all sizes including large dogs
- Able to lift up to 15kg
- Able to cope in a high energy, noisy and busy environment
- Previous canine experience desirable
- A positive attitude and team player
- A genuine passion for animal welfare
Shifts available
Flexible four-hour shifts available seven days a week, either 8am–12pm or 12pm–4pm. We're looking for volunteers who can commit to one shift per week or fortnight.
