Old Melbourne Gaol Holiday Program Support

Imagine spending your volunteer days in one of Melbourne’s most iconic heritage sites, where history comes alive for thousands of visitors. As a Holiday Program Support Volunteer at the Old Melbourne Gaol, you’ll help create unforgettable experiences for families and children during our busy holiday season. This is your chance to step behind the scenes and bring Victoria’s rich stories of justice, crime, and social history to life.
Join our volunteer team and help deliver engaging, educational, and fun activities that make the Gaol a must-visit destination during school holidays. Whether you’re welcoming families, assisting with craft and storytelling sessions, or supporting interactive programs, you’ll be part of a passionate crew dedicated to inspiring curiosity and connection.

Please note that this program is FULL for January 2026 but will open again for school holiday programs through out the year. Apply and we will get in touch before our next intake.
Shifts are daily available 10.45-3.15pm
Ideally a regular weekly shift ie. every Monday 10.45-3.15pm to create a routine over the course of the progams run. 
Volunteer activities could include:
  • Assisting with the setup and delivery of holiday activities and events
  • Welcoming and guiding families through programs
  • Supporting hands-on craft, games, and storytelling sessions
  • Helping maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for children and visitors
  • Collaborating with staff and volunteers to ensure smooth operations
Skills and Interests we’re looking for:
  • A friendly, approachable attitude and great communication skills
  • Enjoy working with children and families
  • Ability to work in a busy, dynamic environment
  • Interest in history, education, or cultural heritage
  • Reliability and a team-oriented mindset
  • Please note that there are several flights of stairs to walk up and down

As part of the application process, you’ll be asked to register as a National Trust Volunteer. Volunteers may be required to hold a current Working with Children Check (free for volunteers).
